    Posted: 09 Jul 2017 at 8:07pm
Hi all , I had some issues with transmission in my HD5 B a while back making noise.  I finally got serious about getting it pulled it out to see what the issue was.

There were teeth lying in the bottom of the case and gear oil the color of milk filled coffee.  Guessing water got in through the PTO cover.

1.   Does anyone know where I can get gears and parts?

2. Anyone deal in rebuilds for something this old??

3. Any manuals with exploded view of how this goes together?

thanks Rainwood

It depends if you have early or late trany - single speed reverse or 2 speed .
Most gears are the same but the reverse idler changes along with one gear on top shaft .
Plan on new output bearing also - that double row ball unit  will run you well over $100 - have replaced 3 of them over life of my machine .
Sold my spare trany a while back but have a few gears for single speed reverse unit .

Water gets in through the shift boot on selector lever .
Check side bearing on the ring gear also - and when rebuilt be sure to reset the lash of ring and pinion - another fun job .

Gemdozer, In your collection, do you have a serviceable transmission that you might consider selling?

Hi Coke This is a 1953 .  I can post a picture of the trans later that might help identify .

No idea how to about the ring / pinion lash.  Isee there are some reprint manuals out there .  Will it cover this?

Yes the service manual covers all of it well -
If you replace the output bearing of trany then lash will need to be checked
also check the bushing in any gear for reverse idler they wear - I found replacement from another source that worked - but forget what now
