May have to leave my new backhoe out at our property. Heavily wooded. Can't prevent vandalism, but at least prevent theft. Anyone use those outrigger locks to secure their machines?

Jim, we sold a lot of them to contractors back in the 90's when I worked at an industrial Ford dealer, worked good, but they can be defeated, but most thieves are not going to put the effort required to do it. If they still build them the same, follow the builders measuring directions closely. Always mark your filler caps in some small way so you know to start checking
for problems before cranking and ruining things!

Kinda hard to steal a backhoe when the batteries have already been removed ! I don't know if you can easily get them out, back in but it'd sure slow down the crooks especially if you can take the cables off too !
options, always think of options....

Jay B has the insight here. Was the only way we could leave a machine even for short periods of time on our other farm. Now there is a live in neighbor and the issues have diminished greatly. Bucket inverted and down, backhoe as noted in a hole with outriggers down and battery removed would be great start.

I know my old D14 backhoe/loader ain't worth near as much as some of the others here,,,but havin spent so dang much time, money and energy on doin an almost  total rebuilding  on it,,,I would sure hate to have it stolen,,or vandalized. I always keep it in the main fenced area where ole Hungry can help secure it,,,,,but,,,
Ole Jim's post kinda made me start worryin all over again,,,,,,,chit,,,!!! Even after rebuildin the main boom lift cylinder, it still leaks down slowly and I had welded some heavy chains on the frame to keep the backhoe from settling down while at rest. Fixin to go out and unhook em and let the hoe come on down,,Clap
Removin the battery is a PITA as the loader arms get in the way of removin the hood panel,,but maybe removin the coil wire,,,?
Chit,,Jim,,,you done gave me another project,,,,,WinkLOL

Not really on topic here, but it is so sad that a person has to be concerned with vandalism. It would tear me to pieces to see an old relic like that backhoe get destroyed by vandals just for their own personal glory. If it did get vandalized, and the guilty parties did get caught, a person still knows that nothing will become of it. It'll be looked at as :just an old piece of junk, only worth a thousand bucks." But to us allis collectors, it's more of something that's irreplaceable. I'd rather see something new get vandalized, then you take the inurance check and go replace it. Where you going to find another back hoe like this. Vandals should be shackled and put on the road crew. Good luck with it Jim, and I hope you can keep it safe and pass it along to the next generation. Darrel

Yes.  And they are all ready to run it today if we get it going.  Don't think the 3 year old it quite ready.
Can't you imagine probate court.  7 kids all wanting dad's junk?

Be glad that they want it. Out of my four kids, only one is interested in my Allis stuff. Makes that pretty cut and dried. Darrel

The clamp over or clamp on devices do work but the lock has to be shielded from tampering .
Locks on controls as well a caps on fuel and other openings also .
Not stolen but had my machines used by individuals while on jobsite -
Had one on a site and another guy about a mile away decided to use loader - busted axle on machine - filed lien on his property after he refused to pay $1200 and att fees .
said to self - next time it happened I would just call cops and let them handle it as me getting angry does nothing .

when ya'll make a police report of theft or vandalism, at the end when the officer asks you "will you prosecute" ? make a sentence at the end of the report saying: "owner will prosecute and expect restitution". that way if person(s) are caught, it's a better chance (but not always) that you will collect some or all of the loss in $$$. otherwise if they are fined, that money usually goes in the county til. and all you get is satisfaction that they were caught!

I'd pull the dist rotor, too.  Maybe put up some game cameras, on the front side, where the brass radiator is.  Meth head scrappers, is the most likely perpetrator, that you'll run into...Wink

sad thing about vandalized units is I KNOW where there's the sister to DJs backhoe, sitting 8-9 yers now, gauges busted, some tin bent and owner refuses to sell it to me....
like I 'need' another project but I hate knowing it's slowly returning into the ground when it could have a nice home in one of my $500 sheds.
great, now I'm depressed again...
