I need someone who has an AD3 or AD4 to look at the drive on the left side from the back of the machine to the 90 degree box that drives the levers. what size shaft is the driveshaft in OD.

thanks Darrel. Mine is at the machine shop having a new shaft built. i had to take out the drive at the rear of the machine under the engine and take it apart also. the end of the shaft on the drive assy was out of round and badly tapered allowing the shaft to wobble. that allowed the shaft to rub on something and wear a hole in one side. it was so badly out of balance that it was going to get the bearings on the 90 degree box under the cab. something interesting i noticed while i was under there is the holes are already threaded and in the frame so the drive assy can be moved forward for a 371 if need be. so the AD3 and AD4 are exactly the same.

My AD3 still sits where I unloaded it, now surrounded by deep snow yet. Wish I could get with my road grader projects. The AD3 needs an engine, which potentially I could pull out of my lunched out HD7, and put in it. The guy I bought it from said that exact for the engine, it is a good working machine.
My forty five has a good running engine, but many other things need fixing. Steering don't work, circle gearbox is out, wheel slant went one way and won't go back, and it only has a couple forward, and one reverse gear that work. Both machines need all of the cab glass. Darrel |

Snow!!! whats that? have you ever run an AD3 or 4? I think if you decided to put a 471 in instead of the 371 it would be a plug and play set up,except for that shaft we were just talking about. it would have to be lengthened. the bell housing off of your old engine should bolt up to any 71 series engine also.

I have not ever run an AD3 or 4. Anxious to. As far as whether I put a 3-71 or 4-71 into it, it will be a "cross that bridge when I get there" type of a deal. Wouldn't mind having the original 3-71 that I got with it rebuilt by someone who knows them well and go with that for originality sake. If it was going to be heavily used, I'd probably go with a 4,but I think the 3 will be suffice for the little I'm going to use it. Darrel

what happened to the 371? if it wasn't catastrophic failure you ought to consider rebuilding it yourself. they are crazy easy to work on.

The guy I got it from said that it was still running. Something like it made a popping or backfire sound, and then started smoking and running badly. Darrel

could just be a bad injector. also a not so common but does happen to old engines is the little shaft that drives the blower can strip the splines and the engine will either not run at all or just run very poorly. it is an easy fix either way

oh and another thing is if the blower shaft breaks sometimes and most of the time it will suck oil around the seal and IF the engine continues to run it will smoke profusely. bolt it down to a frame of some sort and run a garden hose into the water jacket and try to start it. it could be a cheap fix. just remember to have a 2x6 or something to cover the intake handy in case it try to run away on you.

Thanks for the info Ghost. I certainly hope that this summer I can get at the project. Only road grader I ever drove was when I was a kid. My grandpa had an old cat 12 that he let me play with a little. A good operational road grader around my place will kind of have two important purposes, be my play toy, and keep the roads around the place smooth. Sure wish I'd had a road grader a couple weeks ago. With the thaw we had, the whole place got rutted up. Then it froze again, and everything is just rough as ever, and hard on everything we drive. I had a very narrow window of time, when I could have bladed everything, and it would have frozen smooth instead of rough. Darrel

The old fine spline Detroit blower shafts would wear from time of use, to the point they would finally slip inside the couplers. Have changed quite a few over the decades. The same shaft was cabbaged on by Allis for the hydraulic pump drive of the HD7G on the torque converter, where my donor converter has the shaft welded to the drive gear from being stripped. I am working on a fix so I can use other pump drives on my machine if need be.
