well after much angst i have figured out why i kept loosing oil in the steering sytem on my HD16.  when i bought it, the  bearings were out on the clutch actuating shaft and was dumping the oil out.  so i removed the fuel tank and all the steering housing components along with the clutch covers to repair.   oe seal was not available so i went with a national seal with the correct dimensions.  worked great for a while then started leaking again.  so tore it down again and installed 2 seals on each side since the OE seal was a double.   now the third time has revealed why.  seal is pushed out,  figured out the breather on the reservoir was plugged Dead  here is a pic of the seal and a breakdown of how it fits together.  the breakdown is from a HD15 and a part i was needing for dads but mine is basically the same.  one thing about it,  i can have the brush canopy, fuel tank and all the stuff needed off in about 2 hours Big smile

Cal I work on Houle manure handling equipment and we have been told by the factory that when we rebuild a gear box or a bearing housing to use Lock Tite around the seal when we put them in to help hold them in place. We have found that it works very well. Most of the time when we have seal probs its the same thing a plugged breather. I have done this to my goose neck trailer that had seal problems and it has been fine ever since. Hope this is helpful or gives you a idea.
