hello my dad has recently aquired an hd 6 dozer it has the manual 10ft blade that tilts and angles its alittle rough starting got to ether it every time. can anyone tell me the ups and downs of these crawlers and what to look for were going to put a top on it and restore it to some point. so far the only thing we cant get to work is the winch we dont know what lever to move to engage and if one is a brake lever and one a activator lever. well any and all opinions of the crawler would be nice thanks. oh and the tracks are 90% or better and we paid 2500 for the crawler

I have (2) and they are both very good tractors. Both are 6000 engines and start with little or no hesitation. As with most of the crawlers out there, at least the direct drive models, the clutches are the problem, regardless of the brand name. Although I have had no problems with final drives and axles, many people have.

The drum/winch should have two levers with release levers. Squeeze the release and push either lever all the way forward and release the release and pull that lever back. The brake lever should ratchet as it moves back until the brake is set. The gear lever should not move as it has a lock detent for forward, neutral and reverse.

my hd5 had a winch. one of the levers was for forward/reverse, the other released the drum to allow for freewheel to spool out alot of cable. the manual clutch needed to be engaged to drive the winch. does your have a manual clutch or power shift? my cables were stuck and i had to remove the cover and disconnect to get to work.
