We have a D17 Series 4 and have been having some hydraulic problems lately. The tractor has a fully hydraulic loader on it, ran off of the rear remotes. About a month ago, the loader sort of jerked when it was going up, and we thought it was just a plugged filter, so we replaced the spin-on filter. After that, we didn't use it until today when we got ready to put it on the grain auger to fill the bin. We unhooked the bucket tilt and hooked up the cylinder on the auger. It started jerking again, like it had before. This time, it wouldn't even lift the auger up enough to get over the bin. It sounds like the pump just is spinning not doing anything, then all of a sudden it starts pumping for a few seconds, then quits again. What could be our problem? It does the same thing with either remote.

Low on hydraulic oil. Dipstick to the left of the gearshift. Engine off for 10 minutes and oil should be half-way up on the dipstick.

If the oil level is good, it could be the relief valve cartridge.

Just a quick and cheap thought..the remote couplers on your tractor and possibly your loader just wore out? Only asking because when dad bought his series IV the round baler cylinders would jerk until he replace the couplers. We just guessed and it worked for us. We just thought afterwards that the oil couldn't flow through them. Hope that make sense! Again just a thought!

Ok, well I feel dumb... I thought I checked the oil the other day, but I guess I didn't... Grandpa added some to it today, but we didn't have time to use it any to test things. Farmuse01, that is a good thought. That will be one of the first things I check if the additional oil doesn't do the trick.

I had a D17 Series 4 come in the shop last year with the same trouble it turned out to be the suction line hose was sucking air and it didn't leak oil with the engine off, changed the hose and she lifted just fine.

3 WD45's with power steering,G,D15 fork lift,D19, W-Speed Patrol, "A" Gleaner with a 330 corn head,"66" combine,roto-baler, and lots of Snap Coupler implements to make them work for their keep.

Well, we filled the oil up and it still does it. I am fairly confident the couplers aren't the problem because you can hear the pump kick in and out for lack of a better term. Don, your air idea is a good possibility, I will have to look into that. Where exactly is this hose? I assume from the bottom of the tractor to the suction side of the pump?
