Did the early D17s have a center gas tank strap? I just realized the other day that my 1958 D17 didn't have one on it. I'm also in need of a center strap and fuel gauge for my D17 series 4, it's a little on the rotten side, and fuel gauge is shot. Thanks in advance!

If you are referring to the strap that goes from front to back, attaching at the steering shaft area, and then also up front on the battery tray?

I am not aware that any of the D17s had anything different, except the LPG models of course.  I did a quick check of the parts books, and there is no mention of a serial break, or any other mounting options.

Believe the early D17 tanks were mounted like the WD's with a angle piece instead of two studs at the bottom

Angle peice two bolts on the bottom and a strap that goes from the bottom left across the top of the tank to the right side with two regular flat head screws fine pitch thread that hold the strap down. The strap crosses the tank right near the end of the two hood side covers if the strap is just a little too far forward the side cover will not latch. I have a d17 from the first year of production and have removed the gas tank a few times before I got it cleaned and lined.

Oldest D-17's didn't have the front to back strap. There was a kit to be able to install that strap, that consisted of a u-clamp that went around the steering column tube. The factory installed version had a socket welded to the steering column for an attachment point, instead of the U-clamp. S/n 28,607 was the break point for the add-on strap and the factory installed strap. I think the plan was this....if your fuel tank failed/cracked on the bottom, you replaced the tank and added this extra strap to secure it better from vibration. I've seen a handful of old gas tractors that had a much newer painted fuel tank and this added on u-clamp secured strap.

Thanks for the heads up, that gave me a better understanding of the situation. I had to fix the tank on the 58, and had the tank on the series 4 cleaned out. Guess I will try to get a replacement for the 4, and leave the 58 as it is.
