We're looking to upgrade the disk soon and looking at the CaseIH 496 or 3900, 25', 7.5 spacing. It will be used as a finish disk behind the 8070. Are they any good? Pro's and con's? Any opinions welcome.

Some buddies had a 496 and traded on a 3900. The next year they traded to a 3950. The 3950 and 496 are very similar. I can't remember exactly why but they didn't like the 3900. I've heard a few others that didn't like them either.I've never heard a complaint about the 496.

The 496 is a very good all around disk.

any of the IH disks from the 470's to the 496's are great disks, but just a little info, get the 9 inch spacing. the trash doesn't go thru the 7-1/2 as well, and the 9 inch will give you a great seed bed too! I don't know about any of the ones built newer than the 496's. most all of the green farmers also use the IH disks! next best or equal to are the AC 2500's and 2600's.

9" spacing definatly helps in some conditions. my 7" spacing 470 would only go about 4" deep on corn stalks. (mines a lighter disc though also)

There an all right disk, as long as you have a welder around. They are not half the disc a 2500 ac disc is. And won't do any leveler job.

Guys over on Agtalk have mixed reviews of them. Why not a Sunflower?

We had a Sunflower prior to the Kewanee we have now. Frame was light on both for the size of disk. The Kewanee just doesnt do a very level job. We did have the Remlinger 3 bar harrow on each, which adds a lot of weight and stress. We have heard mostly good about the 496 and mixed reviews on the 3900. Never hurts to have a few more opinions.
Thanks Leon B

the older 490's had steel brackets to hold the scraper brackets, then when the 496 came out, the brackets are cast iron and break more easy. that was my problem with mine last year. I finally took the brackets off my 470 and put on the 496. I also had some made out of 3/4 inch steel material. IH parts man said they sell a lot of those mounts now!

I will second what ILGleaner said, the AC 2500 was the best kept secret in the industry.

for an easy to find disc, the IH discs are pretty good, we run an offset 760 behind our 7060, does a more level job than the Krause, and pulls easier.
