It’s not AC but there is a lot of knowledge on here and I thought I would give this a try. I have a Ford 555D backhoe/loader. The left rear wheel is locked up-won’t turn. I tried rocking the tractor and hear a ratcheting noise in the rearend. It doesn’t seem feasible to attempt a repair in place. I was looking for someone that had repaired one of these. I think I have to remove the hoe before removing the complete differential not sure about the ROPS. All advice or suggestions are appreciated.

Somewhere I heard or read, that late ford backhoes are like AC d-series, series II and up, self energizing brakes, have a ball that hangs up, and gums up the works. I think it means that you have to pull the brake housing on that side, so having a couple of big guys on hand for R&R is always handy...

Thanks for the response. I will try to do a little leg work at the local New Holland shop. See if they have the same thoughts.

AveryD12, was this tractor driving when this happened and locked up all of a sudden? or has it been parked for some time and now won't move? There is a brake disc pack, a planetary assembly, and "wheel" bearings self contained in the axle housings with just an input shaft that splines into the ring gear. That brake pack uses two plates with inclined grooves for bearing balls to ride in. when you step on the brake, the linkage rotates one of the plates and as the ball runs up the incline it forces the opposing plate outward against the brake frictions. Might be where you're issue is, check to make sure the brake linkage is returning. You don't need to pull backhoe assembly to get into the rear end. The entire driveline will pivot down out of the frame on the front engine mounts, there are a few things to disconnect first. You will have to pull the shroud around steering column, disconnect the shuttle shift linkage and disconnect the bracket that secures the fuel tank to the top of the transmission. Seat and floor boards come out. The axle itself has two bolts and a plate per side securing it to the frame. The hydraulic pump is driven off the back of the differential housing, the pump can stay but the discharge line will have to be removed. It is a "U" shaped metal line that runs from the pump down and around to the backhoe valve block on the "drivers" side. The suction is a large diameter rubber line typically has enough flex over its length and can stay connected. The driveline only has to drop down enough for the flange on the axle housing to clear the bottom of the frame notch. Disconnect brake linkage and 15/16'' headed bolts around the perimeter of the axle housing flange and it will have to slide straight out until the axle shaft comes out of the ring gear, then it can be lowered and pull away from machine. The passenger side is the same except the ring gear will come out with it.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if the axle housing would come out from under the frame but if it tilts that would make sense. I had driven the tractor about 150 yards and stopped for a few minutes when I tried to resume travel is when the problem started. No indication of trouble before that. I have a maintenance manual and operators manual. The maintenance manual says to remove the hoe. Didn’t want to do that if possible to do otherwise. Thanks for the insight.

Finally got the rear end torn down. Found all 3 planetary gears broken in several pieces. The short shaft has damaged teeth. Parts to repair are $3184 from New Holland. I found a complete rearend from a salvage yard for $1750. Looks like that’s the way I will be going.
