Can I swap my 271 Detroit?

   Finished tearing down and cleaning my 271 a couple nights ago only to find the block is cracked, also the head, cam, cam followers and crank are shot. I've been trying to find a good used motor but no luck yet. Are there any other motors that would fit in my AC HD-5G without major mods???  Thanks

	when allis stopped using the 2-71 they used a buda 4 cyl engine then went to their own 4 cyl engine. these came in the hd6, but i believe they were a little longer to accomadate the extra length in the block. with the rad. position and front pump mounting anything you put in will take some modification. keep looking, you will find one close to you. if the rest of the machine is in good shape, it is worth it to get a good 2-71 to put back in it. they are good motors, maybe yours froze or something simple like that. good luck, hate to see complete machines scrapped.

	HI I have a complet HD5 motor DETROIT 271 but am located near MONTREL CANADA. I should have a block and a camshaft but am not shipping parts over 150lbs you need to pick up parts

	When I did the 4 53 in the HD7, I had to move the radiator in front of the support it was fastened to. The grill is still in the same place, just the radiator is closer behind it. The govt was getting rid of a bunch of 3 53 motors. They must be all gone. I don't see them advertised anymore. They have to be sitting around someplace. The overcenter clutch was shot so I used most of the straight truck clutch that was on the 4 53. The clutch took a lot of trips in and out to get that right. When I put the 8V71T in the D8, I had to lengthen the tractor about 2 inches. I needed to keep the truck 9 speed transmission to reduce the speed because the Cat motor ran about 1100 rpm vs 2100 for the Detroit. I like those old 2 stroke motors. Maybe, I like them because you can buy a 350 hp motor for $500.

	In the upper midwest, several dealers upgraded the HD-5 to a 3-71 Detroit engine to provide a little extra power, actually 1/3 more. There are tractors in the Dakotas, Canada and western Minnesota. The engine cowl was raised and the drive shaft was shortened to enable installation of the longer engine. A gentleman that owns one said it really made a tractor out of the HD5. It would spin the tracks to quote him.
