Went over and got the HD3 on my trailer and home yesterday. I still have to get the injector pump fixed, so we used a military 6 x 6 with a big crane and winch on the back to pull it out of the pole barn and lift it up and onto my trailer. The tracks had sunk into the dirt floor in the barn about 3-4 inches so I was worried if they were all seized up. I took a sledge hammer and tapped the tops of them to loosen them up and then did the same to the bottoms as it started to come out of the barn and loosen up. Was happy to see the tracks rolling and knowing at least that part is ok. Will probably have to loosen up most of the idler roller, but I figure once I get it in the garage I have all winter to mess with that. Here are some pictures.

Here we pulled it out into the opening and they started to hook up the crane to lift it up.

Here it is up in the air after a couple test lifts to make sure everything was ok. I just backed my trailer underneath and they lowered it down. Everything went very safe and very easy.

Here she is on my trailer after we got home. The last time it was used, the tracks were never cleaned so I spent an hour with a screwdriver picking out most of the big stuff. I am hoping to get it pressurewashed this afternoon as the weather is so nice. Hope to get the pump fixed and have it running by Christmas and then work on the rest of the odds and ends inside in my heated garage. Russ's buddies, Mike and Craig were great operators on the 6 x 6 with the crane. They have another 6 x 6 semi and are going to get a lowboy trailer and hope to start a specialty recovery business with their new toys. The rear winch alone has 380' of cable on it. Without the help from these guys, she would probably still be stuck in there as we tried moving it with Russ's 190 and she didn't even budge. Glad to have this one home. Other then the injection pump and new hood panels, I think this one will be just fine. My dad used to use this crawler on his farm from time to time so it is nice to have another piece of history in my hands.

Seems odd to see grouser bar tracks on a loader, lot of bite when turning with bucket and a lot of strain on machine. Most loaders use a more flat track or 3 bar groused so they do not bite as deep .
So now have the before pictures , just have to wait to see the completed restored machne pics. Good luck with the project !

Looks like a good project, Chuck. When I got my OC46, the first thing I did was take the loader off. I knew it needed a lot of work and I didn't want to have to work around the loader. Good luck with it and keep us posted.

Take the pan off from underneath. Wash all the crud out you can. While it is off, wash the rest of it. You will be glad you did. Coke is right about the pads, if you are going to use it much, try to find aet of double or triple bars, it will save your chains. HTH Tracy Martin

This is the same engine and tranny as a D15 diesel, other then it has a shuttle clutch instead of a power director. This crawler also has a pto and three point although most of the three point arms are gone, but the hyd. ram and lifting points and mounting brackets are there. I am assuming that everything is original on this tractor, and it came with the pads that it has on it. My dad told me that they bought it brand new from the local AC dealer and it was on their farm from that point on. The tach cable is long gone, but the tach reads a little over 700 hours on it. I don't think it saw much use. I know it was started two years ago, but hasn't been outside in 12 or so years. Hopefully I can get her going and inside my garage shortly. I hope to send out the pump and injectors this week so I might have a chance to get it together and running on Thanksgiving weekend. Charlie, taking off the bucket and the arms is a good idea. I might end up doing that. I'm kind of leary of the way she's propped right now. I gave her a bath today and she's looking even better now.

The first thing that I noticed as well was the grouser bar tracks on a crawler loader. Years ago I worked for a piling foundation contractor and they had a small IHC crawler loader for cleanup work around the drill rigs. It also had grouser bar tracks. One day shortly after I started working there they had a problem with the final and were complaining that the finals always gave them problems. I pointed out the aggressive tracks and suggested that they take a torch and cut the bars down to half height. They never had any final drive problems after that. I also owned an H3 crawler loader/backhoe that had the normal loader tracks. We used it a lot in the winter on frozen hilly ground so we welded some 3" long pieces of 1/2" rebar on the grousers to give a little more bite and to help stop side slip going across a slope. |

What's the spring for in the center of the boom just inboard of the bucket?

Bigfish, I need a new truck like yours to pull it down there. I don't think my Chevy would like that! I used the father in law's F350 to bring it the 15 miles home to me, but you could tell that the trailer was at it's max. My trailer is 12000 GVW and I'd have to say I was probably all of that with the crawler on it. If I have some time, I am going to borrow the F350 again and take it about 5 miles down the road and go over the truck scale with it on there before I unload it. I wanted to give it a bath first and get most of the mud off of it so I would have a true reading of how much it weighs for my own knowledge and safety. It will probably be a few years before I have a big enough rig to take it for that long of a journey.

Update on my crawler. Got a call from the guy I sent my pump too, and he is hoping to have it done by the end of the week or beginning of next week. Pump was very dirty and rusty inside but he says after looking at it, it doesn't appear that the crawler had alot of hours on it as the pump parts internally look like new, and should be fine after cleaning the rust off and rebuilding. Injectors needed a little cleaning but they all looked good as well. That's good news to me and reinforces my belief and what my dad says that his neighbor did indeed buy this thing new and it was just used on the farm. The tach cable is currently broke but the hourmeter has a little over 700 hours on it which means that I bet it doesn't have more then 1000 hours on it total. Hopefully I will have the pump back and try to get it fired up over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Could a fella put a dozer blade on a loader crawler and vice versa if one had all the parts?

I always thought that an HD3 is an HD3. At the factory they would add the nessesary parts to the base tractor whether it was a dozer or loader. They were options. Could be wrong though.

I've done just that this year. It is a pain to get 40+ year old rusted bolts free, and there is nothing light on an H3, but in the end it is possible. You do need the complete loader or dozer blade mounts as they mount to the crawler differently. Not something you would want to change very often - even if the nuts are not rusted tight...

IH made dozer blades that pinned on the loader arms in place of the bucket. Sort of like a snowplow. I'm sure that AC probably did as well. You could fab up a 6 way blade from parts to put on it.

I like that 5 ton army wrecker. I used to have license for those. We had 3 of them in the section I was in. I would say the track wasn't to hard on it.JP

Chuck, great pictures and thanks for sharing. Looking at your pictures got me to thinking. How did the AC dealers delivery these fine machines back in the day - 1950 1960 era?? Did they haul the base unit on a hydraulic bed-ramp-winch straight truck, then bring the blade or loader separately on another trip? Then assembly it at the farm? |
