    Posted: 26 Mar 2025 at 8:47pm
I recently bought an A-C Model D grader (Serial #3789 with WD-45 engine) and am planning to change all the fluids. The maintenance manual gives the following grades of oil and fluids for the various systems:

Engine oil: 30W
Trans, Rear axle & Tandem: 50W
Hydraulic system: 10W
Steering gear: 90 E.P.

Does anyone know what are suitable fluids and oils, or where I can find a list of suitable replacements using current oils and fluids?

Btw, the fuel specifications are to use 60 octane or higher for regular loads and 70 octane or higher for continued heavy loads!! I may have to start adding some water to the gas to get the rating down.

Also, is it better to use alcohol-free gas, or is 10% ethanal gas OK?

Thanks,
Jim

Most people will switch over to 10w30 for the engine oil.

You can still buy 50 wt  oil for the trans / axle..... Viscosity is the same as  ISO 220 Hydraulic oil if you have better access to that.... also 90wt GEAR LUBE is the same VISCOSITY, but dont mix Gear oil with  Hydraulic or engine oil ... not the same stuff.

10 wt hydraulic oil you can use Hy-Trans , SAE 10 engine oil . AW 32 or 46 hydraulic oil.. what ever the local supplier / FArm Store / NAPA handles.

90 EP is extreme pressure GEAR LUBE ... available everywhere.

ISO-32, AW-32, SAE10W are basically the same in hydraulic oil and if you'll run the grader in the cold winter months it will be preferred. I like ISO-46, AW-46, or SAE20W all year round as it still flows good cold, but is a bit better in the warmer months. ISO-68, AW-68, SAE30 only in the warmer months. As Steve stated SAE50W and 90W gear lube are the same viscosity but not the same constituent product package. If changing complete, either will work well but don't mix.

I would switch to 10W-30 engine oil but that is what I've ran in most gasoline engines since 1975 when I started driving.
That's All Folks!

Thanks to both of you, that is exactly the information I needed before I went messing around with it.

Illinois has been selling 10% ethanol for 40 years.. Not sure you can even buy "ethanol free" anymore in this state.. Maybe a few locations, but not common..

I have been using the 10% in old farm tractors, trucks, car, chain saw, mower... etc sinc 1988. -- or before.

That's good to hear as I have been using 10% in my M-F TO 20 for a few years, so feel better about using it in the grader now too. We can get ethanol-free here in Denver, but it's crazy priced.

May have to opt for the 91 octane as engines lose 3% power for every 1,000 feet above sea level. So at 8,000 feet at the river property, I lose about 24% power. You really notice it when towing over mountain passes or using the Honda 3000i generator.

The grader was transported a couple of weeks ago so I am ready to start tweeking it and making it pretty! It is in pretty good shape as I believe it was used by a county in southeast Colorado and taken care of. There is no tag on the engine block, so it was probably replaced years ago.

It has Power steering, blade circle, and leaning front wheels, strong clutch and brakes, 12 volt system, 12 foot blade, heater in cab, rear hitch, and all the glass is good.

It will just get used to maintain the road to the property as the county says the road is not theirs.

I have some pics but will first have to get them below 2 MB to post them.
