Between myself, my brother, my cousin and 2 uncles not one of us has had a torque limiter fail. That is to date a list of tractors including (2) 7050, 7040, 7030, 7020, 7045, 7060, 7580, 8010, 8030, 8050. Lucky I guess.

Three 7060's, a 7080 an 8050 and an 8070 no torque limiter issues.
Depending on it's previous owners your "new" 7040 should be pretty trouble free. It won't know a 6 row planter is back there even if it's set up for notill and has starter tanks, same with an 18' disc.
I'm not sure what a field cultivator looks like in your area but around here a 7040 would pull around a 24'. We pull a 27' with our 7060, 8050 and 8070, it's a load for the 7060. We try to pull at least 6mph at 3" to 4" deep. I traded a 25' for the 27' when we got the 8050, the 7060 will only do about 5mph with it.

7040 used to be my main tillage tractor. Pulled 5-18's and 13' chisel easily. 24' s-tine FC with 5-bar harrow was a load sometimes, wouldn't have wanted anything bigger in my soils. Mine dyno-ed 150 hp from the factory. Had the pump rebuilt and they said they usually turn them up about 10% so 165 hp? after new pump. One thing, change the coolant and use distilled water and be sure to add the proper amount of coolant conditioner, liner erosion can be a problem.

If it was me, I would have the oil pan dropped, and check the rod bearing clearance. If the bearings get some wear, then they hammer on the crankshaft, and break the crank. I would also pull the cover off the rear end, and check the shaft that goes through the two pinion gears. If the shaft looks okay then you have to go no farther other then replace the shaft. We used to have a lot of problems with broken cranks, and the pinion shaft breaking, till an old Allis dealer told us to start checking these things every 3000 hours. Never had a problem after that. Torque limiter can be a problem. I would also put all new bushings in the clutch linkage. If you are mechanically inclined, you can do all of these things yourself, in a big day.

7040's aren't really known for breaking crankshafts and to replace the differential pin (mainly from operators running the rearend low on oil all the time and/or set at more than 135 HP) means a partial teardown of the rearend and is flat-rated at more than 8 hrs labor for a well equipped shop.
