My Wd45 has the D17 kit (D17 sleeves, pistons etc) I was wondering how much the kits boosted HP? Was told it turned 55hp on the dyno I think but I can't quite remember. I know is sure made her harder to start, takes two 6volts

I would like to know what a D17 kit is. Both the 45 and the 17 had a 4 inch bore and a 4 1/2 inch stroke so sleeves and pistons would interchange. Did the 17 have a taller piston to increase compression or was the only difference a heavier spring on the governor?

I think ML Pankey had all the various specs on the 226. The Nebraska Test book only gives the compression on the LP version of the D17 at 8.25-1. 1400 vs 1650 RPM's. I sure he said there was a bump in compression to go with more RPM's. The gas 45 is test 499. Test 511 is the distillate 45 and 512 the LP version. In test 512 the writer makes reference to the gas 45 having 6.45-1, the LP 7.2-1, and the distillate 4.75-1. Test 635 is the gas D17, 636 diesel, and 644 LP. The complete test reports can be found on University of Nebraska's web site. They might have all the compression ratios in the complete test reports.

I kinda figured the ratios went up as the 17 progressed but the kits you buy today, at least what I have seen, don't advertise comp ratios. I don't know how a guy would know what he's getting until he could measure things.

45 was 6.5:1....17 was 7.25:1 or 7.5:1....170 is 8.25:1.....I think

Yeah Charlie, they used to brag up C/R but you can't find it these days. The knock off M&W's (no advertised C/R) I put in my 45 measued out to be 6.5 instead of 7.3 like the real ones.At least now you can time it to the original fire mark without knocking.LOL

If we ever get a FAQ area, this thread would be worth keeping.

Brian, there is a FAQ area but it only includes questions about how the site works. What we need is a FAAQ or Frequently Asked Allis Questions.
I have thought about that. If I ever set up a website of my own, it will have a place to save some of these type questions and it will have links to all the good sites with Allis Chalmers info.
