When I was about 17, the tree nursery that I worked for, bought 2 5040 diesels from Sievers Equip. in Hamel Il., me being a farm boy, had the privilege of operating the new tractors instead of hoeing the trees. There was alot of brush hogging to do, and the nursery owned alot of ground in the American Bottoms, when a tractor left the main farm, it was possible to be off site for several days . My buddy went to the bottoms a day or 2 ahead of me to brush hog, and at the end of the day left the new diesel parked there , minus the keys as usual, however, that night came pretty good gulley washer, and the only thing visible the next morning was 3 or 4 " of stack !!! Needless to say, he was laid off (permanently) So, long story short, the tractor was sent back to Sievers, and when it came back, never ran worth a crap again, and I had to bleed the injectors on a regular basis just to make it run, my question after all these years is, "What was really wrong that the dealer could not fix"???  It only had the strength of a gas engine compared to the diesel  "brother" I was on ???

Not sure. Sounds like they didn't go as far into it as they should have. I would think that if they had gone through it like they should have, it would have run with the same power it had before. It probably would have always had problems stemming from the drowning, but I would have thought they could have made it run right. Having to bleed the injectors regularly sounds like it was getting a little air(or water) in the fuel system from somewhere, and something wasn't sealing right.
I didn't do it! It was a short, fat, tall, skinny guy that looked like me!

I'd agree with the air leak most likely on the supply side of the fuel system. Do you remember if someone tried to start it and it was maybe hydro locked? Could be it was down on compression from rust or a bent connecting rod.

The tractor went straight to the dealer after the flood waters went down and a tow truck could retrieve it.  I do not know for the life of me why the owners never returned it to the dealer because it never ever came close to running the same again. I bled the injectors probably once a week , the power would pick up slightly, then fade again, still at no  noticeable increase at HP , always 1/2 or less of  original hp !!!   Injector replacement ???

Trash in the return line, damage to the injector pump, restriction in the supply. Time only knows now.
