I've seen 3_14's, 3_16's, 2_12's, 2_14's, and 2_16's mounted on tractors and can usually distinguish between each. BUT................how are the different sizes defined? (moldboard size, distance between bottom of moldboards, etc). By the size plows I'm talking about, you can pretty well guess my age (heh heh), but I've never heard or seen how the sizes are actually determined.

Why is there never time to do it right the first time, but always time to go back and fix it?

The first number is the number of plow bottoms and the second is the width of cut of the bottom (when the plow is properly set). In order words, a 3-16 will plow a swath 48" wide.

Measure plow width between the plow beams perpendicular to the beams or the direction of travel, usually 12, 14, 16, or 18 inches.

Measuring beam to beam is not always correct. I have had plows that had a offset to the standard going down to the frog, thus the beam to beam was not the bottom size.
