I noticed today a very rapid tapping sound (only under heavy load) best way to sdescribe it would be like two spoon handles tapping together and as mentioned very rapid.
I only hear it while working the machine hard (and even then it doesn't seem to be all the time).... as opposed to light work like bushhogging etc.
My first thought was maybe tappet clearance, what do you fella's think? I have been working in the fields non stop lately and just don't have the time to shut that tractor down to poke around with it until I'm caught up with planting.
When I do check into it can any give me an idea of things to check . Thank you. Dennis. (while I'm thinking of it tractor is running fine no problems there just a very slight tapping once in awhile) Edited by Dennis IL - 10 May 2011 at 7:26pm |

Manifold gasket giving out? I think you're right to check the tappets. Can you put it to a load and pull off and put back on each plug wire to see if a certain cylinder is the culpret. Hopefully not a wrist pin. I'm a slow typer. Looks like the doctor already said manifold gaskets.Edited by Lonn - 10 May 2011 at 7:41pm |

Lonn, while I was on the tractor my mind was racing and that thought did cross my mind as well (wrist pin) I have a feeling it's not (sure hope not) the reason I don't think it is is beacuse I remember the Super M making a noise and it turned out to be a wrist pin but that was much louder than this is. Also it just wasn't as fast a tap as this is on the D17.
Different tractors I know, but I would think it would sound somewhat similar.

I've heard that sound from my 45 before but but just forgot, till DR Allis mentioned it, what caused it. My gaskets were bad in front and in back and the neighbor could hear the tapping when we passed in the field. That was the first time I plowed with the 45.

Are you using the PTO? Are you using the hydraulics? Start by eliminating those. I heard that sound from my hydraulics on my D14!
