I am looking to either put a cab on my older D17 or buy another 65-85 HP Allis with a cab for a reasonable price. Problem is, I had looked at the AC 185 model with cab, but was warned that the hand clutch would burn out if I ride it too much while using on a snow blower. Would be cheaper to find a cab for my D17, but not much luck. Any input?

I think you will find that any tractor that you ride the clutch on for snowblowing will eventually burn up the clutch faster than if you used it for say field work. I would go with the 180, and just stay in low reverse and leave the PD alone, unless you reall need it, I bet you would be supprised how well that engine lugs, especially the diesel version. We have a 190xt, and once in a while put it on the blower, and it works great. I know it's a few HP higher.

I talked to my local mechanic who also said the 180/185 tractors were "light in the rear end." Not sure if that meant smaller tires or if they had trouble with the gears. I've always thought they weren't the best looking tractors (grille area boxy), but had a good reputation mechically).

It depends on what you will be using it for. If you were going out an performing heavy tillage all year, ya they are light, but for a loader, or utility tractor, they are great, you will need to be sure that the previous owner didn't kill it dead before selling it, but if you get a good one, treat it right, she will last forever, kinda like a good woman!

The 185 was an excellent tractor. It's PD will last as long as a D17 doing the same work. They are 30 year old tractors, so it's previous use and care will have a large impact on future reliability.

A 185 will be just fine so long as you use equipment for the tractors rated HP. Tractors get torn up from abuse, lack of maintenance or using equipment not rated for that particular tractor or HP. I was around many 180-185 as a kid that were worked hard as tillage tractors and none of them ever chunked a rear end.

I got a 185 last summer and used it on the snowblower this winter and I really thought it was too fast in reverse even in low range, maybe just need a little more heavy duty snowblower.
