I tote the kids around town pulling a wagon behind the B running at a good pace, been doing this for the last year every few days. On Sat. was coming down a hill when the engine began to bog, I looked at the oil pressure which was good but it labored harder and I cut it off. All of this was within 20 seconds or so and I think I heard it knock as I was cutting it off.
I checked it over, oil level good, temp right at 170, so after about 10 minutes I cranked it over and it rotated freely so i fired it up and it ran as normal. Pressure was good so I ran at low speed the rest of the way home.
I pulled the pan tonight, no metal or anything showing in the pan and looked at each piston sleeve and found no scouring (At least on the bottom). No obvious play in the crank and it all looks good. Should I remove the rod ends and check the crank and rod bearings? A rod bearing is about the only thing I can think of as I had a Kohler motor do the same thing years ago and the rod bearing had gone bad. Or should I check the main crank bearings somehow?

If it ran as usual when you fired it back up, I wouldn't even consider your bearings as the problem. I would think about other things first.

My '48 B did something similar when I was mowing the lawn (belly mower).  I had previously heard a little squealing and thought the throw out bearing was getting dry.  I shot some grease into the fitting not knowing it was not related to the bearing and went back to mowing.  I hit a bunch of high weeds/grass and it almost choked down but caught back up and when it did it was squealing to the high heavens and I too thought I heard a bit of a knock.  I pulled it into the shop and cut it off.  Pulled the pan and like you the oil didn't have any metal in it.  I wiggled the rods and 3 had movement on the crank and one was frozen tight.  When I pulled the bearing cap off it was scored as well as the crank.  It's been 8 years and it is still sitting where I parked it.  One of those projects I will get to some day.   LOL

You proably had a piece of carbon break loose and get under a valve . We had a cub we used a lot and it did it ever year are so.

I guess I should pull the caps off and see what I see. On my D-12 the nuts were not wired and cotter pinned like they are on this B, when did they change over?

You have to think about it. If you think you herd a rattle when shutting down, then did it rattle when you started it back up? If it was bearing rattle in the engine, then it should be there upon restart. I'm just thinking out loud but sounds like fuel to me for I have seen engines bog down when something like a water bubble or debris passes through. I'm not saying this was the problem for it happened to you and not me, so any diagnosis would be a stab in the dark. Lance defenitly had bearing problems and he could definatly tell it. so I would asume something else. Just a few thoughts. I know there are some better qualified experts on this site then I so I would wait for them to weigh in on the matter.

It sounded normal when started back up, no ticks or anything. I did not rev it up though. I pushed/pulled on the rods and have no movement.

I have a 900 ford that when started, will rattle thats because the bearings are shot. i just think you automatically thought the wost and maybe thats not the case. Lets see if you can get any more advise.

I'm with Junkman on this.  On my B I could grasp the rod at the bottom and move them side to side on the crank.  Very little movement but enough to tell they were loose.  At least all but the one that was frozen.  As Junkman said by cutting it off and then back on and no noises or anything I wouldn't take anything off or apart unless the noise returns.

OK, I just didn't want to gall up the crank if one of the bearings failed.

If you want to,to satisfy your worries. it's not a big deal to take the caps loose if the pan is all ready off. Just do one at a time and put them on exactly as they came off. but I don't think that is the problem.

I don't know what year your B is but if you have a magneto and the RPMs got low enough the impulse on the mag will start clicking.

 Check generator with belt off for endplay and stiffness in turning....just a thought.
1949 B   3930 Ford- Have owned other Orange ,green,red,yellow,dark green tractors and equipment.

Put it all back together and ran it through a series of tests and it performed as normal with no erroneous noises.

Chalk it up to the cosmos not being aligned at that one given moment.
