Does anyone know what is a normal manual transmission temperature? I am running 2 big electric fans on my 2000 Ford F350 truck radiator. It is now equipped with a 5.9L 12V cummins and I am seeing a 180-190 F range on its 6spd manual trans. The reason I ask is that I could mount a 3rd electric fan for the trans if necessary. I have no prior knowledge of what is normal for a transmission temp.

Seems I always thought the goal,at least for automatics was to keep temp below 250 degrees.

Does your manual tranny actually have 'plumbing' connecting it to a cooler in the rad? If so, that's new to me!
I've always added an extra cooler to my automatic vehicles with trailer hitches, figuring $50 now was better spent than a couple thousand later.

If it has a trasmission cooler you would have more luck adding a larger cooler rather than another fan. If you engine is running normal operating temps and your manual trans doesn't have a cooler then adding more fans won't make a difference.

I forget right off when they started doing it, but yes, Ford does use the same radiator cooler for the automatic trans on a manual. That being the case, I'd say it's not too far off. Just be sure you're using the correct fluid for the trans. Many times it's ATF...

On my Freightliner the trans temp will usually get to be very near the engine temp. I know they are two different trucks, but I wouldn't think that 180 t0 190 would be out of line. The important part is if the oil you are using is good for that temp level.

Yes, the truck was built at the factory with a transmission cooler (fin core) that is positioned in front of the engine radiator. Yes, it has the correct transmission oil. I guess the transmission has a pump that circulates its fluid thru the cooler? Today, I was running loaded (pulling a 27' gooseneck trailer) and the trans temp leveled off at 210 F degrees. So, it sounds like it is within a normal range. Thanks everyone for your input.

What oil is spec'd for the transmission? Is it a synthetic??
My MH (2000 V10 with 4 speed auto) normally runs around 160, but will climb to 210-220 on a long uphill pull. The GCW is around 26,000 lbs and I'm using Mobil 1 ATF. |
