Okay fellas, I brand new at the game.
I just received 6 AC's from my uncles estate.  I want to get them running again.

So, I am going  to take the easy one first  a real nice "C"  It looks like it needs plugs, and I would like to set it up for a 12 volt system.

I heard AC plugs is the way to go.  They say AC plugs are better that Champion so I am going to try AC 47.  So wish me luck.  I went and bought a new plug wire kit to put new plug wires on the ol girl,  How do I figure the firing on the top of the distrubitor?
The firing is 1,2,4,3 and I assume that that is from the front of the block to the rear.
The engine hasn't run in some time.  So I figured I'd start with that first, Carb and other things will be next.
I would really Appreciate your input.
I also will be working on a B, WC, and 4 CAs  in the future.
Thanks so much
Rich Steiner

Welcome to the boards, this is a great place.

The easiest way to get timing rough set is to pull all the plugs, put your finger in the number one hole, and have a friend cranck the engine with the front hand crank, when you feel compression start to build in the #1 hole, go look at the flywheel (I am not positive on a C, but think it's on the flywheel) for the timing mark to appear in the window.  When the timing mark is centered, you are at TDC, take the cap off the disributor, and where the rotor is pointing is the number one post, then verify dirrection of rotation, by cranking it a bit more, now you know where #1 is, and which direction the rest fall.  Fine tunning requires a really good ear, or a timing light.  :-)  I prefer AC plugs, but Champion are fine also.

Go Here
Page two is setting timing. and page 4 is the magneto.
is easy to follow with magneto pictures.
once youv'e completed the C the engine on a B and CA are the same.
A WC is slightly differant but very close.
For any engine to run you only need Fuel Air And ignition. these tractors are very simple
so take it one thing at a time. I usually start with fresh fuel. if it turns over and the air cleaner isn't plugged you should have air. and the distributor was probably set correctly last time it ran unless someone tried to fix it.

Welcome.
I time my engines similar to the way Orange describes, except I use a thin wire thru the spark plug to tell me when the piston has reached the top on the compression stroke. When you feel pressure in #1 cylinder (the front one) insert a wire into the spark plug hole until you feel the top of the piston then slowly turn the engine until the wire is pushed out the maximum (it gets shorter). If you go over the top, start over.
Timing is 1-2-4-3 and the rotation looking at the top of the cap is clockwise (AC means Always Clockwise). This will get you close and you can "fine tune" the timing by rotating the distributor to the spot where the engine runs smoothly. Rotate one directiion until engine labors, reverse the rotation to where the engine labors again, then go 1/2 way between these point to where it runs smoothly.
Since the engine has not run in some time, you may want to drain the old fuel from the tank and add some fresh stuff. Also check that the fuel flow thru the sediment bowl and line to the carb is good. And check out the air cleaner for critter nests/obstructions.
Good luck

Let me know!  and please get rid of the green writing, my eyes are still trying to focus!  LOL
Are these by chance the AC's from a guy that was near the firehall?

I live in about 4.5 miles north of Clarion in the town of Miola.
The tractors you are asking about were my uncles and I.  We had bought them over the years.  He has passed on and now I have them in my back yard,  we kept them in my Grandpa's barn so they never saw weather until now.   I need to do something with them. I want to get them running and then sell a couple of them....
Thanks for asking

Since these tractors have been sitting for a long time  maybe you  should change the engine oil and flush the radiator and install new antifreeze .

Also the hyd oil in the CA since there could be moisture in the bottom of the tank.
GOOD LUCK .

Well, if the distributor or magneto has never been fiddled with...

I put plugs in each wire, set 'em against the block, and turn the crank 'till I've witnessed a good spark at each position.  Then I thumb Cyl1, run it past the clack, and put the plug that fires there... then do #2, then #3, then install four...

Then I crank it and have a buddy shoot a shot of flammable something into the carb, and see if it 'wants' to start... if not, I check the valves for motion (a little compression is necessary), and then I look into improving spark...  Once it 'wants' to start, I clean out the fuel system, and usually it wakes right up... and blows rusty mouse nests out the stack...  and once running, I'll make slight adjustments to the distributor or magneto, but only after I know that it's feeding fuel properly and running stable.

And I never used to be this way, but I've never had any spark plug 'fail' (on it's own accord) that WASN'T labeled Champion...  and HAVE had plugs fail.  The reason I feel the way I do now, is that one of 'em spit MOST of the ceramic right out of the threaded steel... an obvious crimp failure.  Unfortunately, the little remaining piece of the ceramic went into the cylinder, and damaged the cylinder wall bad enough that the block is unrebuildable.  Sad, because the engine had about 2800hrs on it, had never been rebuilt, and all the rest of the cylinders are beautiful.

I am not sure if Deer Meadow is open.  I'm sure it will be open at the end of the month.
Kalumet Camp grounds is much nicer.  It is on Miola Road and is near Cook Forest.

Rich,  First welcome to the froum.  As you can see information is readily availabe here.
I am delighted to see that a caring individual has obtained 6 Allis Chalmers Tractors.  Some would have called the Junk Man and forgot it. Thanks you very much for that.  Other than the C what other tractors do you have?
Good Luck!

Thanks Bill....
My uncle had a WC, 2 Bs, 1 C, 3 CAs.  He gave the one B away.
I myself have my Grandpa's B and my Dad's B.

I also have my uncle's Frick Mill.  This is a 1929 #00 Frick Saw Mill that my Grandpa
owned.  I am going to sell it this summer.

I would like to get these tractors up and running.  They all did at one time.
But they have been sitting in the barn for the past 5 or so years....If we ever get any good weather around here I will be able to start.  So far all we have had is rain, rain, and more rain.

I would like to keep you fellas up-dated as we progress.
Thanks again
Rich
