Need help fixing tachometer on D14 |

The tachometer on my D14 is not functioning. I'm assuming this is just some sort of gear/cable combination? Is the cable I have pointed out in the picture the tach cable? Any thoughts on how to get it working? Thanks.

Yes, that is the tachometer drive connection.
When you have it disconnected, check the cable, chances are the trouble is not in the drive at that point but toward the tachometer instead. If you can pull the cable out of shield you can see the condition of it, whole or twisted off.
The bearing in the tachometer may me tight or whatever and has caused the cable to twist off. Edited by JoeO(CMO) - 02 May 2011 at 8:10am |

The cable that you pointed out is the tach cable. It is driven off the end of the govenor shaft by an adapter. Unhook the cable where shown and drive it with a cordless drill to check the cable and tach. The adapter is getting hard to find. Hope it isn't that.

Sometimes the square on the end of the cable gets rounded off. A stiff tachometer can often be the cause. The cordless drill test is a good one.

The cable on my 17 is keyed, not square. I don't know if the 14 is the same. The tang on my adapter was gone, probablt from the bad tach ot the cable that was gone when I bought mine.

Best to be setting down when you hear the cost of the little plastic adaptor to go from the square drive cable to the slotted drive in the distributor. I have made the drive adaptor on the end of the cable from an electrical spade terminal soldered to the end of the tach cable. Some filing and plier work required to get it right.
