Bought 40 b for son to play farmer,he posted about water in oil, got that taken care of. Now we are looking at pto he tells me shaft is not 1-3/8 but smaller looking online I see early b had 1-1/8 shaft can these be changed to larger or does whole pto assm. need changed? Also can hydraulic pump be added dont know if opening is there, cause dont really know what to look for? Also need price on upper water manifold.

You can find PTO adapters at your local farm supply store. If you plan to bush hog with the tractor, I'd pay a little extra and buy an overrunning clutch adapter that will keep the momentum of the blades from pushing you forward when you push the clutch in. The hydraulic pump can be added if you have a delete plate on the (looking from rear of tractor) left side of PTO housing under the seat. I don't have a picture but should be a flat plate bolted on there. Some of the early B's didn't even have the delete plate if they weren't equipped with hydraulics, but I think a 1940 might?

Thanks, will check, told son to get over running coupler just wanted to see if changing pto shaft was resonable instead of adapting.I know some about tractors and equipment but trying to get him to learn but he listens to too many people who dont know and they are his experts.

The late Bs had an 1-3/8 pto shaft. So it can be done.

I don't think (I honestly haven't done it before) that changing the PTO shaft is too hard, so if you do find a shaft from a newer B with the 1 3/8 splines that would work as well. But it's good (and probably even easier, since you don't have to remove the PTO housing) to have the overrunning clutch. Is this going to be a show or work tractor, or both?
I have a 1939 B that I'll probably use for bush hogging this summer. Once I get it in good running shape I'll get an overrunning clutch at Rural King. If I ever do paint it up and show it, it would be pretty easy to remove the clutch off the end of the PTO shaft for the "original look." If you're not mowing then you may need it at all. Sorry I can't help with the water manifold. Someone else with more knowledge will chime in soon.

The Stamped steel adapter tubes are only good for low HP requirements, If your planing on useing a Brush cutter you need to have a hitch extender, and an overunning coupler (ORC). you can get a ORC that steps up from 11/8 to 1/38. remeber to add the extra lenght of the coupler to the hitch extender. the center of the PTO Ujoint should be over the mower hitch pin. the Hyd. the Hyd delete plate would be on the right side of the PTO housing, Across from the Belt pulley. A woods Bleey mower drives from the Belt pulley by V belt and dosen't need a ORC

Thought it would be easier to change because would like to put three point and hydraulics on it,but would need overunning clutch regardless.Probably going to use for everything he has big plans, guys he hangs with are farm kids sohe wants to play too. Was out with it yesterday to pull disk out of winter spot but said it was to buried.also pulled a couple of hay wagons with it.

Apologies. I meant right side for the delete plate. Thanks Dakota Dave. What I know and what I type aren't always the same thing.

I Have at least 2 Assc. Units off CA's, maybe someone here can chime in if they are direct bolt-on to B so you can have 1-3/8" shaft and CA hyd. Pump, just sold last CA pump, can't help with that. Was going to tear one down and remove guts/scrap housing, rather see it go to good use.

I found a 1 3/8 PTO shaft and had my PTO housing machined for the larger shaft bearing, a simple machining job.
The 1 1/8 andn 1 3/8 PYO assemblys are interchangable, and all will acept a hydraulic pump, which are not hard to find.

Water manifold should be easy to find, try ebay. B and CA are different PTO and pump. |
