flying way too much I have managed to finish the D19 front hydraulic pump and plumbing installation as per all of your help. It is sweet and smooth. I flew all night again last night, took a nap and now I am into my D15 II 'Diamond' [in the rough of course]. lol Last year we split Diamond and put in new main clutch, pilots, etc. Today I ripped into getting the head removed. She had a leaky head gasket and I could hear a valve hissing sound. The head now sits awaiting me to take to the Valve guy. I see both intake valves on nos. 2 and 3 have issues where they are not seating correctly. I will get a valve job and install with all new gasket set. Then hopefully I can rake and ted in comfort. Nothing against the 49 WD...but my disc can't take another summer sitting on the catapault seat. I like standing while driving for my back. Wish me luck!

Dana, Don`t use the AC head gasket. they don`t have fire rings in them. I used FelPro and they have fire rings.

Bergie what in hecks a fire ring? lol I just knew this wasn't going to be cut and dried! I found 2 pushrods bent! Here are some blurry pics of the 2 intake valves that have scarring at one's 10 oclock and the others 2 oclock positions.
What causes pushrods to bend? Foreign objects being trapped in valve? Oh, and when I took out the bolts that hold the head down, the bigger ones were not tightened, I could unscrew with my fingers. However I retightened them to make sure the holes weren't stripped...and they are not , they just were loose hence the head gasket leaking. Do I need head planed? |

bent push rods are caused by the load at the top of the push rod exceeding the rated load of the rod lol , i've seen ( just this week ) a stuck but not bad valve bend rods ! taped the valve down with a hammer and it stayed there , sprayed it with wd40 and turned it with vice grips and it became free . runs great now but as enough to bent the pushrod

Could it be that someone gave it too big a snort of either?

I'd bet on a stuck valve bending a push rod....seems it doesn't take much for a valve to stick in the head if it sets awhile....just my experience.

Dana, Fire rings are the metalic rings in the head gasket where the head seats against the sleeves.
