We just picked up 2 190's one running one for parts. got the good one hauled home today serial# 190 15984 dxt. it has a series 3 hood on it but the last owner tells me that hood is from the parts tractor and when he tried to put it on he had to change the side hoods to make it fit. these are my first 190's and this leads me to assume that this tractor is not a series 3. is there a way to tell what series the tractor is. i plan on getting both of them back in service. also does anyone know an easy way to figure one how much to grind off or add to the shift rails to keep them in gear i also have a 180 that does the same thing.

The home page here has a serial number reference for you to look at. Sounds like yours is a 1967. Don't want to rain on your parade, but grinding the shift rails will not help keep your tranny in gear. Warn shift forks help cause the gear jumping problem, in addition to bad bearings on the input shaft. Have to tear the transmission down and replace a bunch of stuff. My 67 XT is in process of having this done.

By the way. Yours is either a Series I or II. If the fenders look the same as your 180, then you have a series II.

You can actually purchase a "deep-shift" rail (pn 70261443) for 4th gear from a very late model 185 (fits 180-185-190-200)...and it does help for roadgear jumpout. Reworking the 3rd gear detent to shift deeper into 3rd can and does help in some cases in a downhill jumpout condition.

series II started at 19XXX. his is a series I originally bar-grill style hoods. Series II hood would interchange a series III.

Thanks for the info guys. so it sounds like i havea series one and a three. are there any major drawbacks to the series one? and does anyone know of a good place in western pa to find a series one hood and grille? I havn't called sandy lake yet.
