They are looking for information, any information. When they have that little piece of information they can turn it into a whole lot more information. At some point they will issue a GOTCHA and hard telling what could happen to your bank account, credit rating, any on line accounts that you might have, your computer health......well, you get the idea.

Most of the ones on here are seem to be advertising for different companies and websites, but then again, I've never tried to have any correspondence with them!

I guess I haven't noticed any spammers on this forum-------nor do I have much trouble with them at all.  I use Yahoo as my home page (they have some spammer protection); than I use Pale Moon as my browser (quicker than Explorer, has even more protection, and is a free download); and then I add Ad Block Plus to the Pale Moon (also free).  What little spam that shows up goes directly into Yahoo's spam box where it's easy to delete.  The Ad Blocker keeps almost all the pop-up and banner ads from even loading which makes loading what you want even quicker.

Here's the link for Pale Moon:  http://www.palemoon.org/download.shtml

And for Ad Blocker Plus:   http://adblockplus.org/en/

Works for me, anyway.

Is it tough to come up with those "deformed" numbers and letters some sites use that keep web "crawlers" from spamming chat pages?

On here I delete about 30 or so spams from owners registry per day (anyone can delete spam there) and it seems of late the spam in other sections has grown to where the ADMIN guys are not catching it right away or do and we do not notice the job they are doing.
In the help section there is a lot of spam posts also that get put up as it is open to outside posts without log in. In the rest of this site to post you need a log in and the spammers have went through that process to gain a form for their junk.
If you see a spam post in help section , notify the ADMIN people also by reporting it but you can also see the IP of the poster and you can trace it by using the site listed here .
Only problem is spammers also spoof the IP in their posts so they will not trace back to their real site. Also your own computer can become a bot computer sending out spam if you are not careful ..
So on e-mails if someone has mined 1000 addresses and sends out spam and 2 people reply , good odds , now 10,000 e-mails and how many responses ?
