 Topic: Fluid or not in tires?

I am redoing my C and may put new tires on it. I am wondering if I need fluid in the tires? This will be used to mow with a belly mower on pretty level ground. One thing though, one area to be mowed is down by the creek and it does get pretty wet and muddy at times. I have buried my WD-45 to the frame more than once. Should I put fluid in the tires or not under these conditions? Thanks again. Mike

I do not use fluid in my CA W/belly mower as the extra weight compresses the top soil. It is a different story when I use the other CA for plowing/discing.

Greg is right, you do not need extra weight for cutting grass. For plowing or other heavy field work, you might want to fill those tires with something other than air.

When I retired my CA I put air in my tires. I used it for mowing with the Woods L59. One time in the last 10 years I put my WD45 weights on it to plow Dad's garden. You don't need any extra weight to mow.

The soft ground is kinda the issue. I wasn't sure if I would need the weight for traction or less of it to stay more on top. Compacting the soil is not an issue as the mowing is at a cabin and some food plots. What about tires? Turf or ag? Would it make a difference as far as floatation goes?

One other thing to mention is, fluid destroys rims, and other things on the tracor. Unless it is truely needed, stay the heck away from fluid. I am fortunate that every tractor that we have retored that needs weight has rim weights or front weights. The big field tractors still use fluid along with wheel weights, and we have nothing but problems when a leak happens, you seem to never find all the fluid when washing it off, until you need to get to that one hidden bolt. Once you restore a few with fluid in them, you will stay away from it too. Just my $0.02 worth.

For flotation use 12.4X24 (or larger) 2 or four ply tires on the rear and a pair of radial auto tires on the front. Turf tires do not compact the soil as badly as Ag tires nor do they provide the traction of the Ag tire. Turf tires would probably be a better choice in soft ground (assuming they do not spin out in the soft spots and you can afford them).

Turf or Ag tires? For what its worth. Traction. A little old yellow IA International on Turf tires was outpulling everything in its weight class at local pulls around here. By a bunch more than just a few feet too.

Go with no fluid and go with the turf tires. BUT be sure you have another tractor with ag tires on it to pull you out when you get stuck. Turf tires will just load up and spin if you get into too soft ground and you will need the other with some grip to pull you out.
I've got two mowers one for mowing with turf tires and one for pulling the other out when I stick it in the mud.

If you do decide some where down the lie that you wantr fluid, go with Rim Guard. It's just beat juice, It's heavier than Calcium Chloride and non corrosive.

I moe with ag tires. they don't hurt the grass unless you spin them. If your spinning with AG tires your stuck with Turfs. My C has inside wheel weights ,I don't need them their just to hard to take off. The woods L306 adds 700 lbs of wieght 6 inches off the ground, so I don't worry about tipping it either.

fluid does not hurt the rim unless you have a leak. if you get a leak wash it off very well. once you think you have it washed pretty well do it all over again. i usually wash it off when the tire is off and then once again when it is all put back together. if you have a leak repair it right away

If you do run corosive type fluid, change your valve cores every other year to prevent leaks and you will be fine.
