Question re: battery drain - I put a disconnect on the "positive" cable that goes to the starter in hopes it would correct the problem of having a "dead" battery after a couple of weeks. It didn't help. I will put a disconnect on the ground cable to solve the problem, but why didn't it work?

As long as you didn't have any accessory wires connected to the positive terminal of the battery, it should have worked. Breaking the circuit, either positive or negative should solve the problem. It may be a bad cell in the battery. Have you had the battery checked. Even new ones can be bad.

Battery is less than 1 yr old. It's 12V w/ negative ground. I believe it's an alternator.

It doesn't matter if it is 6 or 12 volt, pos or neg ground, genny or alternator. If the only thing connected to the pos post on the battery is your disconnect to the starter, there is no way for anything to drain the battery except an internal problem with the battery. That is as long as you disconnect the battery when not in use and you are not depleting the charge while running the tractor. If you generating system is not working, your battery will discharge every time you run the tractor and will eventually go dead even being disconnected when the tractor isn't running.

If the top of the battery is wet, that will discharge it too. Keep the battery clean. Not only does keeping it clean prevent rusting the battery box, it also prevents corroding the cables.

You have a bad battery or no charging system.
