My 8010 has a nippodenso starting motor on it but when I turn the key to crank I get nothing.I can jump the starter solenoid and it will crank right over. Does the solenoid need to be rebuilt or should I take the whole starting unit and have it rebuilt?
thanks for any ideas.

could be the start switch or the relay. If it works jumping the terminals at the starter solenoid, that proves the starter is working ok. Which terminals are you jumping to make it work? Are you getting juice to the S terminal(small wire)? good luck! Ed.

I don't know anything about your particular starter but are you getting juice from the key switch to the S terminal? If you are get power to the S terminal then chances are the contacts in the solenoid are burnt up or corroded. On most big starters the solenoids can be service while the starter is on the machine. You may be able the pull the cap off the solenoid and clean up the the contacts or get a replacment set from a place that rebuilds starters. I just had a customer who wanted to replace the starter on his DT 466. I told him the starter was probably still good, so I took the cap off the solenoid, cleaned up the contacts, and flipped the plate on the plunger and it has been running for the past 6 months with no trouble. I also just replaced the contacts in the solenoid on my cummins. A new starter was $300. The new contacts were $30. I don't have to tell you which on I opted for. |

Just because you can jump the starter with a screw driver doesnt mean the solenoid contacts are good (unless your jumping the positive terminal to the S terminal). Instead of completing the circuit via the solenoid contacts your are completing the circuit with what ever your using the connect the terminals.
But if your not getting power to the S terminal your problem lies in the relay, key switch, or wiring Edited by chllngr528 - 19 Feb 2011 at 8:51pm |

Safety start switch on the clutch pedal or the safety start switch on the PTO valve.

Well if you have power to the S terminal on the starter while your turning the key that means the problem lies in the solenoid contacts.

On my 7010 PS, the safty switch was bad so it jumped it. Still nothing,so took the starter to the shop and the brushes were hung. The guy cleaned, new brushes and new contacts in the solenoid. Total cost of $42 and now it works great.
