I own a d-17 serial number 11243. I assume that this is a Series I. The power steering is out. I checked the level of the fluid in front of the radiator and it is full but milky. Do I need to change the fluid? How do I drain it, if I need the change? What fluid should I use to replace it with? Or, do I have another problem?

The drain plug is on the right hand under side of the bolster. Refill with hy-tran, or ATF. Is your D17 gas or diesel ?

We had trouble with the pump on our series one, but we got it working, because a new one at that time (15 years ago) was like $1200. Also had a D-17 Diesel in with milky oil, I changed that, and it worked much better, but it did work before i changed it too.

Dexron ATF was the original fluid & can be bought most anywhere. Fill to the point where there is 1/4 inch of oil above the flat gear as viewed through the filler/breather hole. Bill

Thanks again for the replies. I've been trying to get the drain plug out but don't have my 3/4 drive socket set. Laid down under the tractor in some recent cat poo. Tried to use channel locks, ouch, busted knuckles. It sure is a nice day, 61 and sunny. Imathinkin' I'll just go fishin'. I've lived without the front end loader all winter. I'll let you know how it turns out tomorrow.
