    Posted: 30 Jan 2011 at 5:28pm
I have a 1977 AC 185. I'm hearing a whining noise in 4th high gear while running down the road. The noise seems to be coming from the rear end/ axel. Does anyone know what this could be? Such as a bearing or a worn gear?  It only does it in high gear at high speeds.

Never seen one that didn't have some kind of whine in road gear. You just buy this tractor??? or have you owned it for years and now it is worse than it used to be???

Have you also checked the gear oil level in the final drives?  Fill plugs (no drain plugs) are on the inside of of each of the final drive oil pans.  Mike

Yes, those are full too. It's funny, it does not do it all of the time, it is louder  if you are going up a hill, and going down one too. On level ground it seems to be the quitest.

Thanks to all for your help !

Was running the 175 down the road yesterday and I was hearing the same kinda noises. Reminds me of the D15, I drove myself nuts checking fluids, etc, all were fine. I'm learning to keep ears open for new noises, and not worry about normal growling, whining taht seems to be built into these machines.

lol my 185 does the same thing but i have not noticed it lately i guess cause i am so used to it. but its a very dependable tractor. the best on our farm and has anybody had problems with those ear things on the power adjust rims we have replaced two on this tractor last year and are having to replace them again along with the old ones but the other side is fine. any suggestions on what could be the problem on why this is happening and they are also always coming loose after we tighten them.

A friend's D19 has always made a howl or rattle noise in high 4th gear as long as he can remember, and so does mine. Both are used for completely different work, one used hard and the other not so hard. Only ever noisy in high 4th.

I have run numerous D-17's, 190's, 180/185's and 200's.  They all whine , some more than others.
