What I remember from years ago when dad was the mechanic in the area,the shaft from the gear to the spindle used to get the keyways wollowed.I don't remember him replacing spindle casting or gears but there are still several old worn shafts up at the shop.Bearing end play on the worm shaft is the only adjustment provided.(shims) No provision to move worm closer to gear. Big bolt in bottom of shaft holds spindle on.

on my wd there is a bolt with a lock nut on it you can tighten. made a world of difference

that bolt/locknut on the gear inside housing?
