WD wide front install

I am wondering what all is involved in putting a wide front on my '52 WD. The steering linkage and all.  I'm planning on putting a Western snow plow on the front this summer....these back blade's just don't do it up here in this snow. Will the new wheels I have fit? How does the steering get from the pedestal type to this type?
Any and all help much appreciated.

I've never switched front ends, but i would guess you unbolt the pedestal from the frame rails, disconnect the steering shaft and drop the front out. Then you just bolt the wide front pedestal in its place and connect the steering shaft. What kind of back blade do you have. I can move a lot of snow with y Oxnard blade and if that don't work I push it with my loader.

Linkage is the same, you swap out the entire front pedistal.  I split mine at the u-joint and used the wide front shaft out of the pedistal.  Take the pedistal bolts loose, I took the left side frame rail loose to give myself some more clearance.  Slide the NF out, the WF in.  Think it took me maybe an hour to do.  Huds are the same, so your wheels will work as long as you are using a factory AC WF.  Mines a 3 bolt, think the 4 is the same.

You can find a couple wide fronts for it that will work.   A 3 bolt wide front which was used on the WD's, a four bolt wide front which was used on the WD45's and there was also some aftermarket wide fronts from Swartz etc.   that will work too.   When you find an Allis wide front, make sure you get not only the wide front but also the front mounting bracket, the rear mounting bracket and the wide front bolster or steering box.   Your narrow front end will have to be taken out completely, the wide front steering box installed in it's place and the wide front mounted underneath it.   The wheels/tires bolt pattern should be the same as long as someone didn't switch out the front spindles to 6 bolt or something else.   The worst part of the whole deal is to get the old narrow front bolster out.   The four bolts on each side like to be rusted in and break off and the whole bolster likes to be rusted in from the 60+ years of it being mounted in there and the fact that unless it was taken apart at one time and pieces painted individually, the bolster and the inside of the frame rails were bare metal.   If I was going to do this project in the future, I would look at soaking the framerails where the meet the narrow front bolster on each side once a week for a while before attempting to tear it apart.   When I changed out the one on my 45 diesel, I made a stand out of heavy angle iron that supported the frame rails on each side.   That way I could take the whole front end all apart and work on it safely without having to worry about it falling over.   It might also help to take a bolt out of one side of the front engine support and then try to spread each frame rail away from the bolster.   Hope that helps.

Danny, Thats my old 52 gallon electric water heater. I used a 4x4x 3/8 angle iron for a pusher and welded mounting brackets to that.

The guys above are right on the change out, I have done a hand full of them and the frame and bolts like to hang in there after 60 years is right! I remove the hood and radiator too, that makes the job go faster and you can see and get at the steering shaft, I use a over head host to change the front ends out.

I would take a good look at your water pump, hoses, fan belt and thermostat when it's a part with the radiator off. It's a great time to do that kind of maintenance.

Here is how I mounted the snow plow to my WD. I have since sold the tractor so I mounted this plow on my CA, just narrowed the width of the bracket. I have also added gauge wheels instead of skids. The gauge wheels are the ones off of my Woods belly mower, I shouldn't need them on there till spring. I just put them on today so I don't know how they will work yet. I'll try to get some pics.

That was before it got cold Don. With these below zero temps we've been having, I'm glad I don't have any snow to plow. The heat houser is in the shed next to the 45 now, but I seem to be missing a bracket. Maybe I'l get it ready to put on when the weather warms a bit so it'll be ready next year. LOL

3 bolt front ends came on WD45's as well...the 4 bolt was produced for the extra weight of the 45 diesels but I think came on gas as well after they were introduced....I have 2 WD45 wide fronts....one was a swap from being a NF and the other factory....both are 3 bolt fronts. If you cant find a wide front, I may part mine out....not sure how close to PA you are though.

Pretty easy to change out John. If you are looking for a wide front let me know when the snow is gone, I'll see what I've got. I know I have a real nice 4 bolt and I think I have at least one 3 bolt.

John, That's when you spin the blade around and push it backwards. Ya, I don't like looking behind me all the time. That's one reason I made the blade for the loader. The other reason is the 5' snow bucket is too heavy hanging out front.
