The splines on my generator for the P/S pump are worn, but haven't stripped yet. It turns out the shafts on the generator and pump along with the coupler are hardened. The shafts are too small to cut a key way. The only thing my machinist was able to come up with is cut the splines off leaving the shaft on the generator and pump 1/4" hex. He would then make a new coupler and run a 1/4" broach through it to make the coupler.
What has anyone else done to fix this issue short of finding new old stock somewhere? My machinist thinks it would work since we really aren't reducing the shaft size, it's just the cost involved for doin only one. He says $200 to do just mine since a 1/4" broach isn't something he has alot of demand for. If there were other's in the same situation as me that were looking to fix stripped out splines, the cost would come down a bunch.
What do you guys think?

I stripped my coupling out and found that a new coupling would hold and drive the pump. The splines were much worse on the gen. side so I sqeezed a small amount of JB weld into the coupling to help take up the slop on the gen. side and left the pump side clean in case I have a need to dissasemble for some reason. New couplings are avaliable, but they are pricey. Not as pricey as you just described though.

That's good to know. I thought I had seen this come up before and parts were NLA. The splines are definitely much worse on the generator on mine.

Norm to the rescue on this one. For those who don't know his couplers are a little longer than the originals to reach into non worn areas of the splines. He also tells me that if your pump gears are bad, he has a source to replace them with new.

Norm saved me with one also and saved me money over Agco.Mine was for a WD45 diesel generator. Raking hay was just not as fun without power steering.

Yep, anything that had the P/S pump mounted on the back of the generator. In my case series 1 D17D.

I had a wd45 diesel with the power steering pump driven off of the generator. That shaft in the generator was the same as one from a 57 chevy power steering generator, and an early Corvette w/ fuel injection. The early fuel injections were driven from the back of the generator just like the power steering. You might check that avenue as I believe they are made aftermarket

" if your pump gears are bad, he has a source to replace them with new" nice to know, Got an old pump with bad gears and could use a spline adapter...
Many years ago made a mistake, had D17 diesel gen in for a rebuild, Fellow had new longer generators with spline end on it and mount that would fit pump...I didn't think I had enough hose to adapt longer gen but it would have worked. and would have had more output.
