No fertilizer or weed spray and it shows but at the time it was more for fun. It's an early Owatonna Model S 10 foot. Very wet field too.

There's nothing quite like a swather, I mean that as a joke. We get to do plenty of swathing around here, at times it's fun you laugh at all the more usefull things you should be doing, or just hope that none of your friends see you.
John Deere started to build a helicopter, but failed and ended up with the 800 swather. I've had the displeasure of working on some. It's really a blessing when scrap is high. A friend was cutting with one and seen a large burdock, now what can a burdock do to a swather? It knocked off the belt driving the reel, which in turn wrapped up and broke a chain which wrapped up, in turn breaking a gearbox. An unfortunate chain of events. At leas it gave us something to have some beers over.

If there is a breeze it's not that bad but if there is trouble you really start to sweat just thinking about it. A simple machine made complicated. Dad always said Owatonna and Gehl must have hired all the rejects from Allis as most Allis equipment wouldn't be that hard to work on.

Still trying to figure out the Swathing angle, wouldn't a combine do what is needed? I mean why swath only to come back later and pick up the windrow? Does it separate that much weeds?

With all those weeds, when cut with a swather and let lay for a few days the weeds dry and the oats/grain combines/harvests much better.

And you have a bigger harvesting window. You can cut just a tad earlier than a direct cut and let dry. Do the big custom harvesters still do any windrowing of oats and wheat?

A CASE NCM BALER AN TIE THE WIRES BY HAND SETTING ON A SEAT ALSO GOT A WHIFF OF DIRT EVERY TIME PLUNGER HIT 100# WIRE TIE BALES ONE OF THOSE RESTORED IN SPARTA ,ILL IN THE A-C MUSEUM!!!!! WIRES WERE STUCK BY HAND THEN 1945 AN LATER
