Later this fall I picked up a unstyled WC that has a WD45 engine block in it. I brought it in yesterday and would like to try to get it running again as it shouldn't take much as the engine is loose and has spark. Just need to put a carb on it and run a temporary gas tank for now. Was wondering though, the block is definately a WD45 block, but it has a WD serial number on the block. Anyone have any suggestions to determining what I got other then pulling the engine apart, to determine if I have WD45 internals in it, or WD internals. I am thinking that at one time the old engine block went back and this was it's replacement and it was during the time that 45 blocks were being made. If all goes well, I am optimistic to have it running by the Packer game today, but we'll see. I had spark etc. on it this fall before it got cold so it shouldn't be too hard.

I assume the block does not have the inspection plate behind the oil filter and that's why your saying a WD45 block? Would it be possible to pull a plug and somehow measure the stroke by sticking something in the cylinder, it's a 1/2 inch difference so you wouldn't have to be extremely accurate. Just a thought. |

does it have the 45 head and distibutor or does it have the magneto mount, if every thing looks 45 I would bet it was a complete 45 motor somebody installed

Yah, a long piece of heavy wire, that is what I was thinking. I'm confused over the 45 block being WD numbers though. 45 blocks just say WD XXXX not WD45 XXXXX. (at least that is how my 45 is) What is your number?? Edit: never mind, I was thinking tractor numbers not engine numbers.

WD45 engine #'s start with 45 ######. WD45 #'s range from about 0- 101415 while WD #'s range from 200775-358500.

It is definately a WD45 block, no plate on the right hand side. Has AM 3853 10 cast into the block on the right hand side. Has the 4" head on it. Has the serial number on the block of WD 357953-PA on the left hand side of the block behind the carb. If you look at this site:
The number on the block correlates to a 1953 WD engine. The number is too high to be a WD45 engine.
I was thinking of doing the wire test.

Could be it was so close to the change over that they hadn't yet decided on their serial # sequence. Kind of like my Model C with engine #CE35 stamped on the back but all CE motors were supposed to be stamped on the flange. Never know with the early ones.

Well, I'm praying for 45 internals as that would be neat, but either way I think it will be neat to keep it the way it is, as it also has a starter bellhousing and lights. Kind of an interesting unstyled WC that has the best of both worlds.

From what I undertstand, replacement blocks from A-C for the WD and WD-45 tractors were all the later WD-45 blocks when the stock of the earlier block was depleted.
That really makes sense in my mind.
I have a WD-45 with a block with no numbers; I assume the dealer (or owner) did not
stamp the old ser. number on the new block.

I was wrong, My apologies, I made a mistake looking at my notes. my Tractor number says this, not my engine number! My 45 has no engine numbers, it must have been a replacement block. Sorry for any confusion.

I'm thinkin' that the 'factory replacement engine' is probably the most likely scenario. That being the case, I think I'd leave it as-is.

Well, the tinkering I got done before the Packer game with a piece of wire leaves me to think it's a 4" stroke, so it must have been a replacement block with WD internals. Didn't get as far as I wanted to but I got a list of stuff to pick up for this week.

It has the newer style manifold on it with a hole through the hood. I was thinking of putting the old style manifold back on it and fixing the hood, but I'm not sure if the old style manifold is more restrictive then the newer style and plus with the taller head if the angled exhaust will still clear the hood's edge without modifying. I'm on the fence as to what I'm going to do with this tractor. I am seriously thinking of making a puller out of it, but if I do, I'm probably going to do some "mods" to the engine to make it a little more competitive around here seeing that noone else runs a "stock" tractor.

I was thinking the late 53 WD's had the tall head along with the synchro-mesh trans.May have the 45 block as well?(no plate) Some guys on here have those late model WD's.Maybe they can confirm.Never seen anyone go to the trouble of stamping ser#'s on service blocks.I know dad said there were a several p!ssed farmers that bought last year end WD's after they found out they could have had more HP right around the corner in a 45 as all else was the same.

I bought a 1941 WC whicth had WD45 bock. The intrnals, head, mag. etc. were all Wc. The block was obviously replaced.
