Instead of the original 2 - 6V setup.
What size battery is required? Will the battery tray have to be modified? |

It can be done, im not sure on size, but we have got a deep cell battery in ours and it sure helps in starting it, although it does start pretty good anyways. The center brace will have to be cut out, or cut and bent to get a larger battery in there.

A 900 CCA battery should do it fine, I use the same battery in my GMC pickup, HD5G loader , 715B TLB and FD5 dozer. also use same size in just about every other viehicle i have it seems . Starting a DT 466 in IH truck with single battery , buy most of them from Fleet Farm as they ask no questions if there is a problem for warranty .
Here is a size chart you can use to find a size that might or will fit into space you have

You can use a single and as said above the center support will need to be removed. Good 6 volt batteries can do 500 to 600 amps and the owners manual somewhere I read states the 262 diesel needs 1000 plus amps to spin the engine at proper cranking speed. Single screw type top post truck batteries are good for 1200 amps I think. Thats probably your best bet. Keep in mind also that while cranking to feel around all the cables and connections. If you feel any heat in any connections you have resistance burning up the amps that should be going to the starter. Heat is just wasted energy. I replaced all the cables on mine with handmade 1.0 cable with soldered ends. This may be a touch overkill but this way I'm sure I'm getting all my batteries capacity into the starter. Food for thought.

The batteries we've used in the past are 625 CCA. If memory serves correctly, the 2 6v are wired in series, that should be 12v and 625 CCA. In that case, wouldn't a good 900 CCA like Coke mentioned be an upgrade?
I had the local shop make up cables from the biggest stock they had without going up to welding leads.

We have a single 12 volt on a D-19 and it starts just fine. We did not cut out the brace.

I cut the center brace out on my D17 D, its got a 30H truck battey in it, so does the D19 and the WD45 D. Good 6 volt batteries are hard to find, good 12v batteries are easy to find.

Dwayne, putting the 2 batteries in parralell with add the cranking amps and give you nearly 1350 in availiable amps. Putting them together in a series will double the voltage to 24 volts but the supplied amps remain the same.

when i bought my 180D, it had 2 batteries in the box, but only one was hooked up, so i've been running it ever since with just 1 12 v battery.

I have 2 1000 CCA batteries in my D17D. I thought about one of those big truck batteries, but the two 1000 CCA batteries have more cranking amps than the one large battery, at least the ones I saw the day I was looking, and I didn't have to make any changes to the battery tray. I also ran a 2nd 02 gauge cable to the starter in addition to the original. Before I had to take it apart to fix the head gasket, I could get it started without being plugged in or any help into the low 40's upper 30's. With a slight whiff of ether through the manifold plug, it took right off at -10 one day.
