I have a Briggs 23D in my Simplicity Landlord. Needs overhaul, burning lots of oil. I have a chance to buy a good running model 23 I would like to put in it. What is the difference between a 23 and a 23D? I know a 23 is older but anything else?

The changes I know of are mainly in the ignition system. The earliest 23 engines have an ignition system known as Magna-Matic. It's not the same as Magnatron since it still uses points where Magnatron is breakerless.  Magna-Matic has a timing advance mechanism. These engines will have the coil under the flywheel. Later model engines use the typical external coil next to the rim of the flywheel. There are other possible differences such as ball bearing mounted crank vs a plain bushing and a Stellite exhaust valve. All things considered, the early 23 would be better in my opinion.

Seems a lot of these engine swaps just take a little head scratching and it can be done. Replaced the Kohler in my New Holland S16 with Techumsa the ifrst time and now have a Honda 18 HP in it , other S16 I have now has a 16 B&S 2 cyl opposed in it , all horizontal crank. Just put 18 HP B&S into older DutzAlis 616 and changed right in, just had to change one thing on crab.

Got model 23 picked up saturday. Only difference I see is the coil under flywheel. Runs good. Plowed garden sunday just to see how it would pull. Ready for some snow so I can get it out  and play some more.
