I have found a good frame and rear end (at least I think!) to start building a garden tractor puller for my son. Just wondering what engine I should use? I believe the rules limit it to 20HP. I tried to post on Midwest SuperCub, but am having trouble registering. Thanks!

I figure you need more torque than top end, so how about a low reving diesel ?
Something with a good stroke, single cylinder Kohler ?

I have found that the 18 HP Honda I replaced the Kohler K341 in my S16 New Holland tractor is a great engine .. And they can be boosted to around 40 HP if one does some reworking.

Briggs & Stratton Vanguard V twin. The lawnmower racers are using them and there are some pretty good upgrades available for them. Have you observed on www.ihcubcadet.com ? There are some real crabby guys there, but you can pick up some good info. I think www.weekendfreedommachines.com will have some good info there too.

I don't know anything about pulling but I have what is essentially a NOS Kohler KT19 Series II for sale. I say it is essentially NOS because I bought it in 1999 still in the factory crate from a man whose father bought it to make a log splitter but died before completing the project. I installed the engine in a Jacobsen Commercial 60 mower as replacement for the original K482. About the same time I bought a 5' 3-point JD mower and that's what I use. The Kohler probably has five hours on it since I installed it.
If you are interested, send me your e-mail address and I'll send pictures.

I agree with Brain,
Vanguard Vtwin all the way. Lots of potential. Cheap to work on. The hondas Vtwins are not nearly as good of engine as the single cylinder hondas are. Although 20 hp is not that hard to get out of a single kohler, in the long run it will not last as long, especially if you ask it to actually mow the lawn. Also parts are getting expensive for the single and twin kohlers are getting expensive. Edited by firebrick43 - 03 Jan 2011 at 11:08am |
