Narrow row sugar beet planter ???

   Wondering if there is anyone on here who is familar with the 22" row farming common out in MN.  We have many around us in MI now going to 20 and 22" rows with sugar beets by us.  We are looking for some info on what kind of pros and cons are to the different types of planters out there for the narrow rows.

Here is what we know we want to use:

     Same planter for all crops (sugar beets, dry beans, and corn) about 1,000 acre/year
     Looking to use a row starter fertilizer set-up
     Probably looking an 18 row planter
     Need to be adaptable with end-row shut offs

Questions:

     Many used planters for sale are 3pt hitch versions.  what are guys trading them in for and why??
     How easy are the 3pt planters to lift and get around?
     Are the pull-type planters better or worse for compaction compared to the 3pt?  

Any tips or advice is appreciated!!

	I can't personally help much but my brotherinlaw sells white planters, I think at least half are 22 in rows, used for beets, beans and corn, mostly SE ND and west central north Minn, more guys going to them so they can plant soybeans with too.

	20 inch is becoming pretty common here. I don't recall any that are 3PTH however. The ones that do use the 3PTH actually use that as the drawing point but they look like a regular planter otherwise.

	Many of the crops around here are 20" rows. Sugar beets Corn Beans and Sunflowers. you'll need to equip tractors and equipment with narrow tires. Most are running tripple rears and dual fronts to get the power down.

	Yes, we (my Dad and Uncle) are in the Michigan Sugar Co op. Yes, many are choosing the 20" option here too. We feel that the 22" option is better for us by saving us some on narrow tire investment and still getting the better yield potential from all 3 crops while utilizing that same planter for all. So most are pulling drawbar type planters. Were the 3pt type just to hold them over till they bought a new one? Seems the worse part about trying to modify the current used planters to narrow rows is the lack of room for tires between the rows.
