    Posted: 27 Dec 2010 at 5:55pm

I'm looking for a battery disconnect of some sort for my C and CA.  I like this style, Style1, but I prefer the price of this style, Style2.  Anyone have others they like, or other suppliers you'd recommend?  Thanks in advance.

I use the second one of Style1 on my D15II.   Been there for at least 5yrs, works good.  I do however take it off one or two times during the summer and clean it up.

I put this style on my D-10 Series 1. It is on the ground cable. Easy to get to and you can remove the key for some security.

Thanks guys.  Joe, I saw that style too.  Do you remove the key to disconnect the battery, or can you just turn it?  I was just concerned I would lose the key... I guess I could put it on a string or chain.

Murph-NC,

I bought some of those with the key on Ebay.  I have not installed them yet.  On the ones I bought, you insert the key, push and turn to connect (continuity across the terminals).  The key is captured in the switch in this position.  When you turn the key back to disconnect position the key is ejected.  You then put they key in a safe place for next use.  The switches I bought came with two keys.  I bought them as a "battery saver" for tractors and trucks that don;t get used often.

Thanks Mooboy.

So does using one of these on the ground cable prevent the fires I've heard you guys describe that can happen with these old tractors?  Or does it need to be on the positive side to serve that purpose?

Had one go bad on my Zetor a while back. Took a while to diagnois as the first time or two i thought maybe i had left lights or key on. I took cables off  and bolted together using rubber tape and heat shrink. Don't think i'll replace it , just something else to go bad .

It was OEM on tractor, no key , just a T handle that turned, bus bar (conducter) burned up at connection.

I've installed them on tractors, RV's and motor homes. They do the good job but can be a maintainance nightmare and fail frequently. Either install the best H D Marine grade unit, or save yourself some frustration and forget it. I just make the ground strap easy to disconnect.

Murph, we use one similar to what Joe has on our fire apparatus. I will try to get you a picture of it. It disconnects the ground cable from the frame. We have never had any problems out of these. A couple of then have been in service for 20+ years. For separate dual batteries we use a 4 position rotary switch.

Look at their 2484 series on page 2. You probably don't need one this heavy duty; a 20 amp continuous rating should be adequate for your application. Most auto parts dealers should have one in stock.

We carry the ones shown, also have others. Drop me an e-mail and I can send you a pic of what we have. Once installed, a dab of Dielectric grease around the connections keeps the corrosion out. Also offer a Marine style...

some of them can add a lot of resistance just remember to check if you start having starting trouble like others said.
