If you had a choice of a dream tractor for round baling hay, which would you choose, 8030 or 8010? Same price. How much more fuel would the 8030 consume? Thanks in advance, Bill

You are gonna have alot of ponies to spare. 8010 will run a 688 with ease. One neighbor runs a 660 with a JD 2940.

In my own opinion the dream tractor for a 648 would be a 185.  A cab is not a big priority for me. I have been on the lookout for a 650,4 or 8 NH baler.

I currently run the baler with 185 no cab. I am getting older and need more comfort. Chaff down the back of the neck, dirt in the eyes, 90 degree heat baking what is left of my brain is going to end with nice cab and air if I survive the winter. Last winter in western maryland we received 282 inches of snow. Past 5 days we received 30 inches and calling for big storm Sunday. Here we go again.

6080 with factory cab would be nice running that. Live PTO

8010 vs 8030 depends on the price difference. More HP the better unless you have no other use for the 8030 than bale.

My son & I run two rd balers which are Hesston 856A &956A's.  He has a 8030 and I run a RT120, also have 8010 on the 14 wheel rake. The 8010 uses alot less fuel then the 8030.  8010 would be plenty of power for the baler and more economical to run.  Comfort is an issue too since I'm getting old too.  The 8000 series cab are very good too.  Jim

Just curious as to how much fuel you burn per hour round baling hay with the 8030? I burn almost 2 gallons per hour on the 185. I am sure 8010 would be more and 8030 more than that. Thanks for your replys, Bill

8030 would be about 3 gal per hr and 8010 would be about the same as the 185 if not a little less.  8010's are pretty cheap runners..

I'd also vote for the 8010. I've got a NH 660 baler that I used to pull with an 8050 (till it burned up) and it had more than enough power, but was a little tough on fuel, but very comfy. I now pull the baler with a 190 XT diesel, which also has enough power, and is considerably better on fuel. My point is that an 8030's fuel consumption would probably not be much better than what my 8050's was, and that since my XT pulls my 660 plenty well, even in hills, then an 8010 also should have enough power with better economy to boot. Just a side note; going from the 8050 to the 190 XT was definitely a step backwards in comfort, but I still love it, and the price was right on it. Lesson learned though, keep enough insurance on your tractor, that's why I couldn't replace the burned up 8050 with another 8000 series. Darrel

Just curious, how did it burn?  Did the baler start on fire?

Claus, it wasn't hooked up to the baler at the time. Had the block heater plugged in so I could feed with it, and I think the plug must have shorted out. Happened in the middle of the night, and I didn't even know it was burning til it was gone. Happened the day after Christmas last year. I see you are from a Hebron, also, just a different state. That's a shame Darrel, but it's not your fault, things happen.  Back when I owned a Cockshutt I bought a 3pt for it off a guy in Ohio.  His whole machine shed burnt (that's why I got the three point), He had alot of tractors in there and a combine too.  Total loss, He had IH 1466, 1486, 806 and more.  The 1466 was sitting in the door way, He went to move it out of the way but the battery cables were already gone, all He could do was watch it burn.  He told me He was insured for "Machine Shed and Contents", He said when he called in the incident the insurance man told Him "Contents" is hand tools.  So yes, you are right, make sure you have insurance.

read the fine print!! I had an agent switch plans on me while we were going through the insuring process.  7040->burn   insurance-> nothing.    All for a clerical error
