 Topic: Leak around D-14 gas gauge

Gasoline has decided to leak in tiny amounts from around the gas tank gauge on our '59 D-14 (only when the gas is up to gauge level). Before this relative novice tackles this, what should I be considering and could this be as simple as a gasket? While I'm at it, the float mechanism has never worked properly and when the tank is half full it usually shows closer to empty! If I end up removing the gauge this would be the time to try to fix this too. Neither problem is a "problem", more an annoyance that I'd like to spend some time on. Kip, I had the same problem with my D 15, it is just a simple gasket that has deteriorated (cork I believe). My problem was the #@&*$%! slotted screws holding the gauge fast would not come out as they are to get to without removing the tank. anyway I sold the tractor before I replaced the gasket, so if I can find it I will mail it to you. The gasket is a flat o ring and is available from AGCO. Hit the screws a tad and probably on the lower two you will need an offset screwdriver in order to remove the screws. Or use a screw driver bit on a 1/4 or 3/8 drive ratchet wrench.

Been there !!Yeah, some 'engineer' must have a been dreaming using 1/4-28 fine thread bolts !!! I got 3 out of 4 out ok....%&%&^% with the 4th !! Lucky me it's the top left and I can't afford to fill the tank(gas is $4.40 / gallon today).
I had to loosen off the 'control sector assembly' to get a screwdriver in there,straight on.Best to get a tight fitting slot,tighten just a tad, then back off.If there is ANY resistance,tighten a bit, then back off a bit more.Wished I'd had a bit more patience the first time.....
I got rid of the gas soaked cork float, put 1/2 of a 'plastic' one on from a Cavalier sending unit.Other 1/2 went onto my other D-14.
Made my own cork gasket,sealed up OK....Now if the price of gas would go down...I'd fillup !

agco does not servie the gasket they use an o-ring now have in stock

My D-14 was doing the same thing. You are right about it being a pain. I ordered a new gauge from Norm and it is a nice piece. New seal and gauge and WHAT a difference knowing how much gas I got and I can enjoy a CHEAP cigar while mowing and not blow myself up. Others have fixed the float but I did the replacement in mere minutes and got going again.

While you have the gauge out fixing the gasket, replace the float with one that won't rot away. Call Kevin at 866-654-2855 and ask for an A-9313-C gas tank float. It's $4 plus the ride.
