My newly acquired d17 series iv has an oil leak on the pto engage lever. I've been told that an "O" ring needs to be replaced. Some say the tractor has to be split, other say you can take the side panel off and do the job.
What's the final word? If it's possible to do it throught the side panel what do I need to watch out for?

I have been told the same thing, But if someone has hands that small and can work in that small of a area should be a heart surgent making big money not a mechanic. I have split alot of D17 and it's alot easer to split the tractor to do the job. MACK

The pto lever has a roll pin that connects it to the lever that moves the collar inside. Tat lever inside has the spring and detent ball to keep the pto engeged. If you can get the roll pin out< you should be able to pull the lever straight out and replace the o ring. When you put it back together you can replace the pin with a bolt. If you happen to dislodge the inside lever and pop the ball and spring out, good luck getting it back in there. MACK is right. It is a lot easier to do when split.
