New Providence PA? I'm in Leola.
I'd say go with New Holland. With AGCO phasing out the orange line I don't know how good of a parts or customer service your going to get in the following years. New Holland is a strong company and will back their products for years to come.

What size tractor? We've had excellent luck with our Deere's too. I also like our AGCO's. They are all good tractors now, just decide on which dealership you want to support.

Yes, what size? My boss has a smaller New Holland and it's a blast to use. If the larger ones are just as good as the smaller ones, I'd be inclined to go with them.

We have hundreds of the 6 and 7 thousand, ten series, 15, 20 and 30 series deere's in my territory. Overall they have all been incredibly reliable. But there are so many grades of tractor, from complete basic to the premium tractors, and they're completly different tractors other than the paint. Do you have any more specifics on what model your looking at getting.

Have you talked to a Deere dealer yet? We bought a new mower for our township and when I went to get bids, Deere had a program for municipalities that made it impossible for anyone else to come close to their price. Of course that has been a few years ago and I don't know if it included tractors, but I'd ask.
If you have a good dealer I wouldn't worry about an AGCO tractor since Challenger and Massey parts fit it, replacement parts will be available for as long as the township would own it but 10 years from now the resale might not be to good.
I wouldn't spend $3000 more of the taxpayers money if the green or blue tractor is that much less. I hate to say this but if the green one is close in price that's probably the direction I'd go. Are you going to put the old tractor out for bids or see what they will give you for trade? 10 years from now a new Deere will probably have the best resale value.

You
You didn't say what size or what you use it for but my road commisioner and I were talking about upgrading from our two antique IH tractors and I showed him these pictures but he thought it might be overkill for us.

Dittos on New Holland. Don't know all of your options, but drove a Kubota 135X this past summer, what a sweet tractor. This is on my short list, will be able to stay orange on the smaller ones. Talked to Kubota rep at HHD, says bigger HP is in the pipeline. Deere will definitely be there in resale, but I think NH will be good as well. Neighbor that bleeds green got a new 6430 (I think that is the number) and dealer can't seem to get hydraulics working right on it.

I work for the county and the airport has a New Holland. I think its a TN75. The best thing to do with that tractor is run, not walk, away from it. The tractor was back to the dealer I dont know how many times due to hydraulic leaks, and this summer with less than 1000 hours on it it blew up. The cab is also noisy and there was some issues with the gearshift or transmission. I dont work with this tractor often, thats why some of my details are a little sketchy, but I have worked with it enough to know I wouldn't have one on my farm.
Good Luck |

Thats odd, we have a TN65 on our farm (open station with dry clutch, pretty basic, but has the synchronized transmission) and other than the turn signals and flashers not working (went out right after we bought it used) it has been a great tractor. We had a problem with the clutch also right after we bought it, but that was because the previous owner had removed a snap ring that let the clutch lever drop too far and the throwout bearing came out of the fork. It has almost 3000 hours on it and doesn't have a leak and starts right up even below freezing. I even used it to pull our Krone 1500 Variopack that I usually pull with my 7000 (and it works the 7000) and this tractor just put up with the abuse (I had to be careful not to stall it when finishing up a bale in heavier stuff). It is also very fuel efficient. The only complaint I have is that it is a little light in the front end, but it does have a short wheel base, so it's very maneuverable.

Not sure what the brand of plow is, it looks like a Monroe, but it sure is a nice unit. I think they have a rotary broom that hooks up to it too. We have an M with oversize tires with calcium and weights and all it was used for was to pull the wobble wheel roller and we have been doing that with the trucks for years so it gets started a couple times a year and thats about it. Our other tractor is a diesel utility, a 5?? that has a 5' 3pt mower and a small 3pt roto tiller (that I've never seen on it). We were talking about a Kubota or something red or green with a roll bar to replace them both for saftey reasons as well as reliability.

Dave has an extremely good point. Be conservative. Don't buy something because you want it, because you WILL end up hearing it from the tax payers later! Especially here in Lancaster County. I can see a letter to the editor of the New Era already...

AGCO Does have government discounts but the dealer has to check with the National Accounts Department to get them. As an AGCO dealer if the AGCO is too high buy the JD, the NH in this area are hit or miss. Either the customer loves them or they spend there time at the shop then they are traded for something else.

First off, you don't say what size tractor it is. Since Case and NH are one now they combined alot of tractors. The smaller compact tractors of both brands are premerger NH design(boomer). The larger tractors are Case magnums, with different sheet metal and a different axle is available(push out further/double jointed) for tighter turns, but same basic tractor.
The larger john deeres with independent front suspension and suspended cab/seat are much smoother and your employee's will be more productive day in and out. But all things considered, pick the best dealer, not the best tractor because they are to close in comparison. Around here I wouldn't own a new tractor but a deere due to the excellent dealer support but If I live 50 miles north or east it wouldn't be any thing but a Case/IH |

I think Challenger sells them set up already for municipal use. Your local Cat dealer probably has them.

Stay with CNH, Deere or Kubota. Save your taxpayers the hassle along with yourself and don't waste any time with the current AGCO. Who knows what they will do tomorrow. |

Spud, Our local Cat dealer is Cleveland Brothers and I think they want nothing to do with the challenger tractors. Haven't seen anything on their lot.

I would not buy a kubota. They make some good engines but I don't care for their tractors. If you put the specs for a certain hp of tractors side by side, usually the kubota is the lightest and the agco brands are the heaviest. Weight alone does not tell quality but common sense says more iron is usually more durable.
Agco builds a good tractor. MF messed up big back in the 80s but that was 30 years ago. Today, their equipment is equal or better to any mainline manufacturer.
In spite of what some think, orange paint on a kubota does not make it an ac.

cant agree spud...at least not with the light/medium duty Kubota's....we have one and pound the snot outta that thing....snow removal, landscaping stuff....you name it, I've done it or tried it. They have great hydraulics, power, easy to run and fairly comfortable....and super reliable...only problem I've had is the mount for the air cleaner snapped awhile back.....

Most of the municipals around here run masseys or jds. Right of way mowers are more massey than anything else.

The only complaint I have heard on large scale Kubota's is the cabs have low head room.....other than that I havent heard anything. At our yearly Grange Fair local dealers loan tractors for use at the tractor pull track....they had a Boomer, a Case and a Kubota....the Case barely moved the whole week other than when the kubota had a pin fall out of the 3 point, the link swung down and took the valve stem off the back wheel....oops lol had to run the Case until the flat was fixed on the Kubota.
