Could be a C, is the rear end fairly wide or straddle two rows. B is a one row tractor. Fred

Is the serial # a B or does the owner just say it's a B? The serial is just in front of the shifter, Tractor No. B###### or C######

No factory Bs were made with narrow front ends. The B is about 5 ft wide outside the rear tires, and the C is about 6 ft wide outside to outside tire. That is adjustable quite a bit, but its a reference. If it is a B it probalby has the rear wheel hubs pressed onto the axle shaft and a 2 inch nut holding it on. If its a C it probalby has a 5 bolt pattern like a truck holding the hubs onto the axle.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

the owner said its a b, I didnt look at the serial number, it dose have a 2 in nut holding the wheels on it though like steve said. so it looks like it might be a b with the wrong front end

Heres your basic narrow front Allis Chalmers B. As close to factory as I could fake it.
Here it just rolled off the D L assembly bay. Ready to head out to pull. Took first on its first pull. ![]() ![]() Does well in the field also. ![]() ![]() |

It was narrow when I bought it. It has a C steering box in this picture which I changed back to a B steering box and fabricated the steering box arm to use it with the arm down like a B arm.

Mr. DL, do you think they may have done a tranny-forward swap on that, or was it a "Johnny Cash"-type of mod? In other words, did they have a C with a bad tranny and a B with a bad motor lying around, and one day said "hmmm, and two become one". Just wondering what the engine number, steering gear(Gemmer or Ross), and such were, as compared to the tractor serial number on the tranny.

I didn't do it! It was a short, fat, tall, skinny guy that looked like me!

Your question comes up every time I post the pictures. The answer is no. I bought as a factory B. The guy I bought it from knew that it was factory for sure as he knew the guy he bought it from that bought it from the from the guy that bought it brand new and it always had the narrow front right from the dealer.
I proved that not to be true when I swapped out the torque tube to have a starter. The lobe at the bottom where the wishbone connects had many hours of ware where the wide front had worked into the metal. ![]() When I rebuild one I do look at all parts one at a time. I can be lied to but the parts don't lie. |

To answer your question Mike, No. The first six months of C production had hand brakes.
