Hi guys - I've got an Allis 712 garden tractor with a blown 12hp Kohler motor. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for repowering it - either with a remanufactured motor or some modern equivalent (Kohler, Briggs, Honda...anything that'll fit). Something that will bolt in without too much trouble - anybody had experience doing this? Does anyone know of a good source to purchase said "new" powerplant?

Try Small Engine Wharehouse, They have retrofit packages for your tractor. Just Google them. Located in IN. but ship anywhere.

I would also get an estimate to re-build your motor.
This way you have a comparison to a new retrofit.

You can buy a new motor cheaper than overhaul your Kohler. Other thing is to look for another tractor like Murry or other brands and use engine from that.
I found one for free that guy said did not run , has 18 HP B & S engine , bad switches, bad solonoid, . Engine now resides in 616 D A tractor i got with blown engine. Edited by Coke-in-MN - 20 Oct 2010 at 10:09am |

I think you can rebuild a K-Series Kohler for under $500 if you do it yourself. Even cheaper if you use aftermarket parts. I don't think you can buy a NEW comparable engine or one that will fit for less than $900. As far as swappin from another brand, some of the older Wheel Horses and Ariens also used the K301 with the flange base pan.

Hi guys - from what I've been able to find, I can get a new replacement engine package for about $1500. Pretty steep, though I haven't looked to see what a new (comparable) tractor costs. I have a 917H that I use for mowing and tilling and this 712S really doesn't have a job to do right now...so I'm hesitant to put any big bucks into it. However, it's not really worth much if I try to sell with a motor that doesn't work. Decisions, decisions.

A local lawn mower shop put new piston and rings in my k14 kohler about 5 yrs ago{in a case 444 74 model} for $275.00.Runs great ....guess it depends on how much needs replacing. |

TerryGA, how do you like that Case and what all do you use it for. We have a 222 mid 70's model(red and wheat color). We use it to pull a trailer for yard work and ride it for fun. It will fly. We have the 38 in deck in good shape but don't use it, we use the old Murray to mow with.
