Saw this guy inside the blacksmith shop at the entrance to Capitol Reef National Park. Caught a glimpse driving by and did a U turn to go back & check it out. Anybody have the history on this unit?

real rare. i think someone here said they were made aftermarket, not by Allis. Basic unit was a B.... wish it was in MY garage! I will look for another photo posted last year.

Thought they were called a power horse, b engine and skid steer, that is about all I know and I may be wrong.

There was a post on this a while back. Search for Power horse. May come up that way. From what I remember, this was made for farmers who still had all of the horse drawn implements, and were hesitant to buy a tractor. It worked just like a mechanical horse. The farmer sat behind it on the implement and held the reigns. Pulling back on the right rein made it turn right, left made it go left, both made it go straight ahead. I think it even had reverse to back up, but not sure how that worked. It was driven by steering clutches kind of like a crawler. It was actually one of the first examples of a skid-steer machine, like a Bobcat. Some others on here should know more. Allis made a lot of the power plants for them. I think they also had a larger one with a Chrysler engine.

I didn't do it! It was a short, fat, tall, skinny guy that looked like me!

Yes, Eimco Power horse.
Allis did make a prototype of this concept, but it never made it to production. Strikes me it is listed as a Model H in Swinfords book....
I think it would be cool to have one also.

Were these used solely for a power source or did people use them for other things? Looks like the little bugger would pull like heck, but be a handfull to manuver.

If I remember correctly I saw one at GOTO "Coming Home". Someone sits on a cart behind and directs them with reins. Good Luck! Bill Long |
