New to the forum, but have been following the posts for some time and have gained a wealth of information. I'm in the process of rebuilding my Grandfather's 49 G which took the place of a team of horses back in the late 50's. The engine is at a machine shop getting the crank cleaned up and the block bored .010 over. A valve job and the oil pump rebuilt. I have two questions, and was hoping someone could help. First, would anyone know where I could get the rivets that hold the ring gear on to the case and second when tearing down the belt pulley housing, the bearing cone's on the shaft that holds the drive gear were facing out. In the repair parts illustrations, it shows the bearing cones facing in towards the drive gear. Was hoping someone would stear me in the right direction. Thanks Jim. |

I think standard procedure when replacing a riveted gear is to use bolts, probably allen socket head, regular or button head which ever fits better. You aren't going to get cold rivets tight enough.
If the cups in the case have their small diameter out as the case covers come off to disassemble, then the cones have to have their small diameter out. If like in a wheel hub the cups are pressed into one piece with their large diameters out then the cones have to match and are held by tightning the spindle nut. The last rear axles I had apart had the small ends of the cones outward. The will only go together one way. Gerald J. |

Thanks Gerald, It looked like the belt pully housing had been worked on before, I thought maybe it had been assembled wrong after looking at the parts illustration. My brother has a harley shop and they use rivets on the sprockets but he did have any large enough to fit the ring gear on the G. The Button head allens would sure be a lot less hassel.
