What is is easiest way to wire in an alternator on a D17 diesel. I have a 10si delco. I want to try to tap it into the factory harness. What do I do with the wires on the old regulator. I want to do this without destroying the original harness so I could change it back if when I decide to restore the tractor.

Don't bother with an alternator. Just get your generator rebuilt, no rewiring required.

I was going with the alternator because of cost. I put a new regulator on my gas D17 and it cost almost $100. I already have the alternator so it wouldn't cost anything to put it on other than time.

There's a few minor differences between alternators, but the basic delco alternator needs two and a half wires. The battery wire from the generator goes to the post on the alt, and also you need a wire from this post to the S (starter) terminal on the alt. Then take the field wire from the gen and route it to the R terminal on the alt. Usually this works. I think this is right, but it is mnf night so...

I've had my generators rebuilt in the past for $100 each. I bought a new voltage regulator last week for my D14 cost $50 at the local auto electric shop. My D14 had a alternator with a cobbled up wiring harness. So I am putting on a new wiring harness and generator to make it original again.

Let me think,,,,,generator has been on it for around 50 years. Why don't you just have it rebuilt, no mounting hassle, belt hassle and no changing back to original later.

Get rid of the generator you will be better off in the long run. I just got a quote on a one wire alt of $75 built to energize at any RPM I want. Depending on what is wrong with a generator minimum fix is $100.

Leave the wires off of the regulator and tape off the ends. I am not sure but maybe one of them energizes with the switch. You could use that one to energize the alt.
